I can fully understand why someone really into cars, as I used to be when I was driving daily for fun and leisure, running a website about cars, turning up to meets, track days etc, can be disappointed that the programme has become nothing more than general entertainment with cars featuring occasionally in the show (slight exaggeration, but you get the idea).

In some respects, I have turned more into the type of person with less of an active involvement with cars so I don't watch the tests on the basis that I might actually buy one of the cars featured (back in 2002, I did buy one of the cars they featured - and Clarkson slammed it, while the magazine gave it car of the year! - A Focus RS for anyone that's interested).

It's good that it has become a very successful show, and a great export, but it's no different than any TV show, or a band, that progresses and 'loses' its original fans/audience. However, from a business point of view you can usually see why that often makes sense (attracting new audiences, keeping fresh etc).

I think Top Gear has become a little too slapstick and perhaps a cut in money has resulted in more banter in the 'studio' (hangar). The car tests are now dumbed down because most people don't care for them and simply want it over to the next 'car vs xx' scene. There are only so many ways to sex up the shots of cars going around a track or down a runway, so it's not surprising they can get boring. But, they have to keep them to try and retain any impression that it's about cars.

But I get it. I do enjoy the banter, even if it is often very contrived, and think TV would be worse off should it ever be axed - but it probably can't go on forever as they will have done everything possible that makes for good entertainment and will either have to start over, or become very mundane.

The broad selection of items on Top Gear, coupled with someone like JC who is like a human Marmite, does make it a show you 'like or hate'. There is no debating that. It's a fact.

No, no, no. It is not a fact. It is opinion. I watch Top Gear every week a new episode is broadcast as well as the near constant repeats on Dave. There are some episodes that I'll happily watch many times. Others that I'm indifferent to and a few that just plain bored me.

I'm indifferent to Marmite as well. Marmite flavour crisps? Love 'em. Marmite on toast? Sometimes if I fancy a change from plain butter. Marmite sandwiches? Never!

I think you might as well just bang your head against a brick wall than to try and reason with somebody so determined to create an argument.

I ask you again: what is your problem with someone having a difference of opinion about Top Gear than you?

Nothing, and not once have I said that somebody who likes Top Gear is wrong for liking it. If you read my comments from this morning you will see that I completely understand why Top Gear now has record viewers, and I have always said that I am coming at this from a car enthusiasts perspective. As it's called "Top Gear" and meant to be a car programme, I don't think it's too difficult to understand why a car enthusiast would be a bit disappointed at Top Gear's latest output.

YOU are the one who seems to be offended that I think it's not as good as it used to be and are unable to accept my opinion.

But anyway, this has now turned into a pointless discussion.

I wasn't offended at all, just interested in why you thought as you did about the show.

Sadly you're right though about it turning into a pointless discussion.

Striker,

Cracking choice in car. I've been out in a V10 and it was fantastic :)

Do you get to visit the Nordschleife often?

Glad you enjoyed it!

I do but to be honest it has lost it's appeal in the last year or so due to the high numbers of visitors and the huge increase in prices. It now has new owners and they're trying to turn it into a theme park style attraction which is putting off people going and risks the sheer existance of the place.

I went over there at the end of May. It was a nightmare. Closure after closure!

I enjoyed the steak at Pistenklaus more than the driving on that visit. I think I only got one relatively clear lap!

Do yourself a favour. Give the ring a miss. Far too expensive and far too busy. I've been going to a quite a few "public" roads of late, namely the Stelvio Pass (a bit TOO twisty to be enjoyable but the views are astonishing) and the Route Napoleon (sweeping bends on smooth tarmac). Both of these are free and relatively quiet if you go at the right time. For a small toll I can also recommend the A8/A10 from Monaco to Genoa along the Italian Riviera. I did it in March on a warm evening around ten at night in a BMW 7 Series. One of the best 90 mins of driving I've ever had.

Closer to home you've got the EVO triangle in Wales. Check out this website:

Aha. Glad to see it's an opinion you hold now and not fact. We're getting somewhere.

I'd love to do a bit of a blast across Europe taking in roads like the Stelvio! I'd hate to think how much fuel it'd take from just south of the Lake District at 15-18 mpg haha.

The Evo Triangle is a favourite of mine. It's only about 90 minutes away from where I live so is quite a regular thing for me. Even christened my car on the way home from buying it

Nice! Only thing I've driven like that is a Scooby.

You probably get get a better value performance car than an Evo or STi Impreza. It's just a shame they are only Japanese tin boxes with a big turbo and fancy diffs.

I'll probably only have it another year and then get something else a bit more luxurious. Wouldn't mind a C63 AMG if the prices drop a bit more :)

Lucky, lucky bugger........

A lot of my friends also say that. I always say that if they didn't spend so much on alcohol and designer clothes they could easily afford one. They are relatively cheap cars now as it's a buyer's market.

I could afford one, just not prepared to get rid of my landies for one. Dont fancy the fuel cost either, plus i doubt they come with auto/tiptronic box...or am i wrong?

Defenders? I'd love a Defender or Discovery 3 or 4 :D

You can get one of the older models with a Tiptronic gearbox and there's even an estate version. Both very rare though!

In the latest incarnation, the Evo X the 6 Speed auto is much more popular than the manual!

Anyway, these are the Auto models

Evo VII GTA

Evo IX Wagon (this is a manual but you can get an Auto version)

Nice car and sounds amazing. I have just got rid of it's nemesis, the E92 M3. I've had BMW's for the last ten years, two M3's, a Z4M and a 330d. I can't recommend an M3 enough. Unfortunately BMW don't offer anything in the same class as the R8 V10, so I had to switch brands.

Very very nice. I'm quite envious actually! I'm a big fan of all things M-Power.

What R8? I'm guessing probably the Coupe?

Got the defender 90 did have a 110 but turned out that i didnt need that much space. And a Disco 300tdi jap import.

Did look at the 3 and 4 but to be honest they are grossly over priced, and i didn't really need a third one, so bought a vauxhall insignia instead.....i know, i know....still very pleased with "my grown up" car,,,

Is the 300tdi reliable? I actually need another car to ferry my 2 Border Collies around in. They are ruining the Evo :(

Nothing wrong with Insignias, if I needed a large family car it would be my first choice. I had to go and work in Kent for a week recently and work supply us with hire cars. I had a diesel Insignia and it was damn good! I think it's a brilliant looking car too.

The front of your house must look like a car showroom! (albeit, with added mud :P)

The 300TDI is the most reliable engine they ever made!!! the TD5 is absolute pants with the suspension to match...the airbags constantly pop leaving the disco sat on its behind with its nose up in the air....

The def is the transit engine on a 08 plate....i'm quite pleased with it.

My insig is an 11 plate 2.0 cdti auto the 160 break version (130 a bit flat) i get around 48/51 to the gallon, so well chuffed with it.

Lol not a car show room exactly, just the two landies and the insig. Oh...and lots of mud, which annoys the hell out of my neighbour ;);)

Ah yeah - I'm confusing two different threads...just read about that on the other thread!

The older they get the probs can develop. Get a good one though and you're laughing. During the snow my disco never stopped, it was fantastic.

Corosion on the arches are a major problem so make sure you get one thats clear and whack on some arch protectors.

If its a dog basket you are purely wanting it for (like my disco is) then it's perfect. But remember with one of those you have no excuse not to go into work when the white stuff returns....:D
