I don't think the trams will go underground; it somewhat defeats the idea. 3rd and 4th City Crossings hopefully.
Manchester could also do with a north/south u/g heavy rail link to take the pressure off the Oxford RD/Deansgate/Castlefield bottleneck
Similarly Liverpool could do with trams.

Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness then return to Southend Central. Then walk to Southend Victoria and get the train back to Liverpool Street

I once boarded a Leeds train at Oxford Road, it was due to go Piccadilly/Guide Bridge/ Stalyvegas; but something had failed at Piccadilly and we reversed out and stopped just short of Salford Crescent before going forward via Victoria to Leeds
