Yes that's the point I was making - nice (comfy seats, tables, air con) tends to be thought of as 'newer" by the general travelling public. Thereby two trains from the same era canbe perceived quite differently.

You can easily make a train appear much newer than it actually is with a deep clean/refurb, and on the opposite end of the spectrum a knackered looking train can look much older. I think people also view the more spartan rolling stock as 'older', purely as it is less comfortable to travel on...

Judging purely on how well-built they seem from a passenger perspective, Siemens. Everything works, very few rattles, good ride quality. Subjectively, I think their products tend to look nicer than other manufacturers too.

I'm not even sure the LNER was held intentionally! I was on it from Kings Cross to York and I think the 11 minute delay was due to unruly Sunderland fans travelling back from Wembley. Certainly police met the train when it arrived. Have to say in my coach it was mostly well behaved and...
