The last time I had a signaller cab ride with me was a few years ago. Whilst happily going along the route (on a fast section of single line, where the route undulates-we nickname it the rollercoaster) the signal ahead reverted to danger, where I proceeded to go passed the signal at around 60mph...
The default mode as listed in the traction manual is not 'eco', but they're currently running in this mode, which I think makes them slower than a class 172. This may be to do with something to do with the transmission, conversely it may not be the case....
The last I heard the Leamington - Nuneaton service was having a mix of 196s (weekdays) and 172s (weekends). Although I don't know if this idea has changed recently.
