    St Enoch Viaduct, Glasgow

The City Union is still fairly regularly used for freight diversions. Maybe a few days each year. I've seen tanker trains and container trains in the past year or two. In the late 70's there was a regular Merry-go-round with 2 Class 20s on a Saturday morning. I think the Killoch - Longannet...

    Tube Map of Britain

I find it quite thought provoking. Its the London tube map but with names of stations across the whole uk replacing the familiar tube stations. What if a route map of uk rail services was drawn on a single rectangular sheet? For most of us, as the tube map recognises, geography is not critical...

    Caledonian Sleeper

On Saturday the wires appeared to be down at Caldercruix. I didn't know trains were reversed with passengers in them these days, as appears to be the solution in this case

    Glasgow Subway new stock

    Caledonian Sleeper

The Fort William to Edinburgh portion cancelled tonight, 25th, problem with train. It ran as empty coaches to Edin.

Storm Babet observations and general discussion

Trains to Oban cancelled after a tree fell on the line. Scotrail services to Fife cancelled all day today due to the forecast impact of Storm Babet.

How does a layman understand 'any permitted route'?

Thanks for that advice - I'll be checking the forum ticket site in future! A lesson learned there - a cheap fare all on one itinerary. It appears that Glasgow-Shrewsbury via Chester is not a permitted route - as it doesn't come up in Avanti or Trainline journey planners. This seems counter...

    Scotrail rained off 25 Sept

Storm Agnes was Wednesday/Thursday. The trains I'm referring to didn't run on Monday 25th. This was a local holiday in Glasgow and the West Highland trains might have been expected to be busier that day. I checked on Realtime Trains and the northbound sleeper took 4-3/4 hours Glq-Ftw on the...

How does a layman understand 'any permitted route'?

Glasgow to Shrewsbury is not a hypothetical example! I made this journey myself recently. I wanted to go via Crewe, so I could do a bit of trainspotting. However the price was steep. What I ended up doing was advance single to Warrington, Northern to Chester and then on to Shrewsbury. I think a...

    Scotrail rained off 25 Sept

Thanks, title now amended. Storm Agnes is forecast for Wednesday evening. Trains are moving again this evening. The sleeper and the evening trains to/from Fort William are shown on real-time trains

    Scotrail rained off 25 Sept

Scotrail West Highland services North and West of Crianlarich don't appear to be running today. The rain or threat of rain didn't stop the Alcan tanks or the Sleeper, which arrived early. Real-time trains doesn't show the Fort William services as cancelled. They're not shown at all

Trivia - Shortest Journey Requiring Two Changes

Leaving Kelvindale at 2334 then changing only at Glasgow Queen St allows an arrival at Jordanhill. It needs a walk from the High Level to the Low Level at Queen St

    Britannia motion failure 22/8/23

Regarding '1' in the post above. The crosshead is one of the drivers for the piston valve (through the combination lever). If the crosshead is broken then its possible that valve would not be able to release steam from the cylinder at the end of its stroke. Pressure rises in the cylinder, due to...

    Britannia motion failure 22/8/23

Looking at the RAIB link in post 16 above, would either of these two criteria apply and lead to notification? Was the line closed for six hours - if so then would not 1(7) apply? The outcome of the Settle accident was mentioned in post 8 above. Bearing that in mind why wouldn't criteria 1(9)...

    Britannia motion failure 22/8/23

I think an identical design of crosshead is used on the 9F and BR Standard Class 5. It would make sense to examine the crossheads on these classes. I don't know if any are in use currently. It might be possible to view a potential failure at an earlier stage which might give a pointer to an...
