From my experience, and taking recent disputes into consideration, ASLEF is by far the more moderate of the two main rail unions and far less prone to taking strike action.
ASLEF also recommended acceptance of the original New Deal for Drivers...
There are also three sets of terms and conditions within Northern, rather than two, because of the ex - TPE train crew at Barrow-in-Furness and Blackpool North.
I don't know but surely the situation is made more complex with the ongoing negotiations regarding whether or not First will operate TPE until Feb 2016.
