Going against the grain of this thread slightly, I'd like to compliment any forum members who were driving southbound on the A1 yesterday afternoon. Fantastic drive from Doncaster to St Neots, and apart from the occasional average speed zone, I don't think I had to drop below 70 once.
Maybe, have to wait & see what the 810s are like. Either way Luton could probably do with better railway connections to the north than Corby & Bedford.
I had the pleasure of driving down the A1081 at about 2 o'clock this morning, where I found myself stuck behind a BMW 5 series doing about 45 all the way from Luton to Harpenden. Highlights included braking on straights, not slowing at all for roundabouts, and crawling through the empty town...

I am always amazed how lane discipline improves when the A23 goes from 3 to 2 lanes southbound. It's as if the lack of another lane to the right focuses the minds of the middle lane hoggers.
Although I only drive that road at night, I often find myself pulling into a lay-by to let traffic past - my Land Rover won't do 60 on that road. But I do know what you mean; whenever I'm driving something quicker, I'm forever catching up with somebody doing about 35, and usually wandering in...
