Fiction book recommendations for transport enthusiasts

Freeman Wills Crofts was a Golden Age writer of detective novels and his books often revolved around railways. Death of a Train and Death on the Way are two good examples. His books are known for being a little mundane as they generally involve his detective slowly solving the crime via a series...

    TRIVIA: Rhyming rail journeys

Rhyl to anywhere that ends with 'Hill'.

Anachronistic Song lyrics you'd have to be at least 40 years of age to 'get'

There are plenty of Half Man Half Bisuit lyrics that would fit. For example the line "Hey, Blakey, does your bus go by the dark, satanic mills" would probably need a lot of explanaton to anyone not familiar with On The Buses (and William Blake).

Trivia; Help! The train service that replaced a suspended bus route?

The Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway operated a train replacement service for a couple of weeks during July 2016 while a local road was closed for repairs.

    Problem renewing railcard online

I've been having trouble, too. The site won't recognise my user name and password and I don't get a password reset email when I request one.

Telephone Kiosks at UK railway stations

The Shrub Hill K8 has been listed since 2009. Rhyl has a K6 at the bottom of the footbridge on platform 1, though it looked a bit neglected the last time I passed it. Bangor still has one too, I think.

Shortest UK car number plate you've seen

I'm sure remember seeing A9 at about that time on a 2CV in Chester. I assumed at the time that the plate belonged to the Duke of Westminster and that it was temporarily on such a normal car before getting transferred to something posher.

    Conwy Valley Line

Do the 197s stuggle with the section between Betws and Pont-y-Pant in wet conditions more than the old 150s and 153s did? When we travelled on the line last autumn the driver of the 197 we were on had to continually apply then drop the power to get up there.

    Railway Bookshops.

Treasure Chest Books in Felixstowe has one of the best transport sections I've seen in any secondhand bookshop.

Are there any British settlements that have completely depopulated in modern history?

Berney Arms used to be have around eleven families living there (according to this BBC News article), now all gone. Another railway related one is Riccarton in the Scottish Borders.

Names which are relics of places that no longer exist

Yes, it is. (Or at least it was when I drove past it a couple of week ago).

What would you do if you won the annuity version of the lottery?

That's a great idea. I'd pay for it in cash at a ticket office, too. "I'm afraid that's five hundred and ten pounds*, sir." "That's fine!" (Pull out a thick wallet and start counting notes). * (£510.00 first class was what I was just quoted on TheTrainLine.com).
