Trivia: Level crossings with no pedestrian access while they're down

Nice one. Yes don't bother with the road bridge at North Camp! Annoying when trains are crossing and you see yours go over from the wrong side, but (as suggested above) whoever controls the gates – human or automaton – is pretty efficient at raising the barriers and a couple of times I've...

    Conwy Valley Line

    And even fewer railways.

    Landslip between Edenbridge and Tonbridge

It came from "Gensheet" via another contact, I do not use this myself, but believe it to be accurate. As 30907 says, both could be true. This is a frequent occurrence as it is susceptible to flooding at Haxted. The alternative route via Dormansland is not significantly longer, and timings are...

    Landslip between Edenbridge and Tonbridge

…although the original post has been amended to call at Edenbridge station forecourt (the usual arrangement), rather than on the main road. Hope the message gets through to the drivers! Operators noted, Go-Ahead London and the inevitable Ensignbus, no doubt others too. As you state, now...

    Landslip between Edenbridge and Tonbridge

Yes, it was actually between the site of Crowhurst South Junction and the bridge over the Oxted-East Grinstead line. Network Rail had to build road access from the south side as (apparently) the landowner on the other side was obstructive. As it turned out, this made access easier than...

Are there any train drivers earning £100k or more?

Daily Mail accounts show that one (unnamed) director earned £6.2m in the last financial year. This from a paper frequently lambasting "fat cat" salaries (Source: Private Eye). Pot, kettle…

    Railway books discussion

Oh dear! Of course, I have Fastness of France, which I remembered shortly after making my last post. Although not cover-to-cover, I have read substantial chunks, mainly concerning parts of the Massif that I have visited. I agree with all your (Calthrop's) comments: it's a superb work, in his...

    Railway books discussion

I did search this thread for a mention of TEOTL specifically, but found nothing (despite your and others' frequent mention of the author) which is why I decided to post. Sadly I've not opened the book for many years so I really must revisit it. I found it by chance in a second-hand bookshop...

Felix the Huddersfield Station Cat passes away

Tonbridge station has had various cats over the years, fondly remembered, but seemingly none at present. These fine plaques are on platform 3.

    Railway books discussion

I've only read two books by Bryan Morgan but The End of the Line (1955) is probably my favourite railway book of all time: his wanderings along minor railways around France, Italy and Germany are wonderfully portrayed in prose that is evocative and almost haunting.

Trivia - stationless towns with the nearest station in a different county

Tenbury Wells (Worcs) is an odd one too, nearest station now Ludlow (Shropshire) followed by Leominster (Herefordshire). No longer any regular bus services to either railhead though! Both Worcester and Kidderminster are much more distant, though there are infrequent buses to both. And when it...

    'Awkward' towns without railway stations

Agreed, but I believe there was a local referendum on this some years ago, and the proposal was rejected. Can anyone confirm (or deny) this? It does seem rather bizarre.

    KWVR - Infrastructure Upgrades Funded

True, but again the potential is almost zero in my view. There is a reason this line closed in the 1980s, and back then there was the added opportunity to travel through to the main line at Tunbridge Wells and on to Tonbridge, which is lost now. Groombridge, the only village that would benefit...

    KWVR - Infrastructure Upgrades Funded

Of these three only the first would - very possibly - have any potential as a commuter-type operation. The other two simply don't go anywhere useful.

    'Awkward' towns without railway stations

Crook, expanding town, close to Bishop Auckland, track still down part way. Study under way I believe.
