Your Favourite and Least Favourite Musical Era

My instinctive answer to the question of what my favourite musical era is would be the late-1980s but after some thought I can't single one out. All eras have good and bad music, or as I prefer to think, music that is and isn't to my taste. I've taken no interest in the charts for years nor...

Any trains with front windows for passengers?

Mea culpa. Note to self: I must wear my glasses. These are scanned out of 'Bulleid of the Southern.'

Any trains with front windows for passengers?

As for double-decker EMUs, Oliver Bulleid produced some, the 4DD, for the Southern, or the Southern Region of British Railways as it had become before they were actually built in 1949, which were used between Charing Cross and Dartford. They were withdrawn in 1971 and, apparently, two...

Trend towards '80s sounds in modern music

Anybody interested in modern music that isn't of the boy-band/X-Factor variety would be well advised to have a listen to BBC 6 Music. They've been playing Chvrches for a while and only a few minutes ago played Public Service Broadcasting's 'London Can Take It.'

Pronunciation of BR steam loco numbers

My Dad did forty-seven years on the LMS and BR and would always say numbers like "Fifty-Five, Eighty-One." The initial 4 added to ex-LMS locos after nationalisation was always omitted.

Interest in the Railways - where did it start?

My Dad did forty-seven years on the LMS and BR so it was sort of bred into me. My interest has waxed and waned over the years but never completely gone away. I've never been a Train Spotter though.

    Your railway books

I'd recommend O S Nock as well. Other favourites are:— Harrold Gasson: 'Firing Days,' 'Footplate Days,' 'Nostalgic Days' and 'Signalling Days' L T C Rolt: 'Red for Danger' Adrian Vaughan: 'Signalman's Morning,' 'Signalman's Twilight' and 'Signalman's Nightmare'

Steam locos still working when withdrawn

According to Adrian Vaughan — I can't recall if it's covered in 'Signalman's Twilight' or 'Signalman's Nightmare' — it was a far from rare occurrence on the Western.

    WW1 ambulance or hospital trains.

I'm not aware of any dedicated books on the subject but 'Wounded' by Emily Mayhew, ISBN 978-0-19-932245-9, has a good chapter on ambulance trains.
