Redhill to Watford Junction avoiding zone 1

It looks like the West Hampstead fares are some sort of 'via Zone 1 excluding the mixed mode premium' fare. When you compare Watford Junction to Coulsdon South with Watford Junction to Redhill, you can see that splitting is a good idea.

Redhill to Watford Junction avoiding zone 1

The "avoiding zone 1" is the default. If you go via Victoria or London Bridge you pay more. Peak £16.40 Off-peak £10.80 Is the fare via Shepherds Bush. No pink reader needed. Peak £19.00 Off-peak £12.60 Is the fare via va Zone 1 changing between National Rail and London Underground at...

Greater Anglia Bombardier Aventras (Class 720): Technical discussion and introduction

As far as reports go, 720519 was reported on test earlier in the week. 720137 was reported not to have passed fault free running yet. 720101 has been reported at Willesden, not Ilford, but has subsequently moved over today. 720144 hasn't been reported in London. Happy to be corrected if...

    Who are London NW Railways

Indeed, not valid at all on Chiltern. First valid service from Birmingham New Street by train on Sunday is at 1034, arriving in London at 1251. Two earlier journeys by bus to Birmingham International.

Rail nationalisation: ideas, suggestions, predictions etc

It isn't wise to underestimate the costs involved in splitting operations. It is odd that people are calling for one nationalised operator and less confusion, yet a view is also taken that services could be hived off to TfL. What could more easily happen is for TfL to take a closer degree of...

Rail nationalisation: ideas, suggestions, predictions etc

Fares on flows like Redcar to Middlesbrough seem highly likely to be set on a single fare basis in due course as part of the roll out of regional Contactless / PAYG fares. That will remove a lot of the confusion. A blanket 0930 morning restriction and an afternoon peak window seems possible.

Labour promises rail nationalisation within five years of coming to power

Flying doesn't have as much fixed infrastructure to pay for. Therefore, as distance is further, the cost of rail infrastructure is greater, while the cost of air infrastructure diminishes.

Labour promises rail nationalisation within five years of coming to power

On a point of order, the 379s only didn't go straight to Great Northern because of the unprecedented downturn in passengers from 2020 onwards. The 360s went to EMR. There were outlets for the units which survived the mass extinction. A lot of the concerns about the railway have emerged...

"Automatic refunds for delayed trains"?? How??

I thought c2c do automatic refunds for users of their smartcard, matched against the trains people use. https://www.c2c-online.co.uk/tickets-and-fares/automatic-delay-repay/ In a future where all local journeys are on smartcards or Contactless, you could see how touch in and touch out could...

    New International Rail Terminal

I am not sure what is low cost about the need to cover the cost of expansion of facilities and hiring more Border Force.

Rail nationalisation: ideas, suggestions, predictions etc

It might be noted that those benefits were only safeguarded for the relevant employees because of privatisation. There are plenty of examples of employers reducing terms and conditions for new staff, and sometimes for existing staff.

Labour promises rail nationalisation within five years of coming to power

The critical thing in the public's eyes however is that state ownership is perceived to keep all the money in the system, that is all the public funding and fares revenue goes to the railway. This view of how the world should work applies to all industries that people perceive to be delivered...

Rail nationalisation: ideas, suggestions, predictions etc

You hope that, but who is advising political parties on fares reform? Contactless payments seems high on everyone's agenda, across all political views, and is mentioned in the news stories. The natural corollary is that something is needed for longer distance travel. If Labour ask the...

Ideas for improving the CrossCountry timetable

Yes, I agree. I think the thing about both Exeter and Southampton is the peaks and troughs of demand to travel from those places north of Bristol and Reading. Most of the time 1tph south of Bristol and Reading deals comfortably with the demand, but peaks caused by holiday and weekend traffic...
