That single observation sums up the situation perfectly. Many travelling football fans (as well as certain other groups) consider being loud, boisterous, visibly drunk and so on as being an acceptable part of their day out, whilst in reality it simply isn't acceptable. End of conversation really :|

Ask them to stop if you don’t like it. Contact the police if you feel an offence is being/has been committed. If you don’t confront people causing a problem how will it change? Perhaps they don’t realise they are causing a problem? I have had perhaps 2 problems in all the times I have confronted people who I feel are causing unacceptable behaviour. I you haven’t the nerve to confront something you don’t like don’t complain about it. YOU are letting it happen. WHY?

But hey I am just a scum of the earth, trouble making, potentially criminal, moronic, knuckle dragging, untermenschen football fan – I mean what would I know about anything. I only travel by train, to matches most weekends (paying handsomely for the privilege) and manage to never cause any trouble, despite having the odd drink, or perhaps a chat with my mates or (god forbid) the very occasional song! I now realise I have no place on the railway (and perhaps in life in general) and will henceforth spend my Saturdays in quiet contemplation of the errors of my way. Perhaps I could take up knitting or some other social acceptable past time. Perhaps you could help me out with a past time you may consider acceptable.

I do wonder about how much exposure to the real world some people have ever had. I would suggest that anyone who has been for a night out in any town or city in this country will have come across much worse anti social behaviour or “trouble”.
The incidents described sound like a bit of singing, some people enjoying themselves, nothing more. The OP described a serious criminal matter - those who perpetrated those acts should be pursued and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. They are not football fans – they are criminals

Good post, my fellow MK-based potential criminal!

I don't know what the answer is to the drunken yob culture in britain which this is an offshoot of towns and cities up and down the country as we all know are turned into warzones on friday and saturday nights britain is the worst country in europe for yobs and drunken behaviour binge drinking is a major social problem in the uk.
Bad behaviour by football hooligans is most likely on the way home as you can't get in the ground if you are drunk i have come back from chelsea west ham with all the fans in high spirits but good humoured and no trouble i haven't seen any trouble whenever i have returned from games i would ban anyone convicted of serious crime on the railway from the entire rail network for a determined number of years and if caught travelling during the ban i would bang them up.

As I have pointed out, the train-guard is on their own. They will NOT receive any support, from BTP, their TOC or indeed, other passengers when the lads havin a larf decide it would be funny to give the jobsworth a kicking.

Now, there are many wrongs with todays society, it is above our paygrade to sort them out individually. I am not superman, either are my colleagues.

Anyway, the issue is that they should not be behaving like that, why do they not have the self-awareness to realise their behaviour is antisocial?

We are back at square one, we had this conversation before. Again, I'm sorry to say that you are grossly naive if you feel that it is up to any one individual to tackle sizeable groups of people behaving in an unacceptable manner, in any situation. If that really were the case then why the large Police presence at football matches, surely it would be down to everyone else to just politely ask the trouble makers to kindly stop it and be quiet?!

Seconded. Another well reasoned, intelligent observation. Spot on.

Credit to the Sheffield Wednesday Fans at Nottingham yesterday, no bother whatsoever, even when the locals started trying to fight them drunk.

Old habits die hard I suppose(Miners Strike..)

.....why the large Police presence at football matches....,

It may surprise you to know that, apart from the larger premier league clubs and a few flashpoint derby matches, there is a surprisingly small police presence required at the majoirty of football league matches. Big crowd, no trouble doesn't sell papers.
