As far as I know, Virgin have driver depots at Euston, Wolves, Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Polmadie (Glasgow) and Edinburgh. I believe there are guards based at all those too, plus Holyhead. Each depot's (even grades within) routecards will vary, but it could be that some Manchester turns involve Manchester-Euston-Birmingham-Euston-Manchester, some as driver, some as a passenger, which would explain your observations.

Edit - I'm not sure if West Mids guards are based at Wolves or New St, but drivers are certainly the former.

Euston and Manchester TM's do both routes as booked work, you could get a Preston TM on a Manchester if they're struggling to cover jobs but it's not common. "West Midlands" TM's as you call them are based at Wolves.

Several 221 diagrams start/end at Crewe.
Where are the crews for these based?
I also see Virgin crew using Chester.
Aren't Voyager crews also based in Birmingham (from their XC days and Central Rivers maintenance base)?

Preston men certainly cover Crewe area moves (such as the movements in and out of LNWR depot during the night), but I'm not sure which (if any) other depots cover them at the end of passenger services. AFAIK Euston, Manchester and Liverpool men all sign to Chester, with the latter two covering onwards to Holyhead as well.

Preston / Manchester / Liverpool and Wolves all have Voyager work which starts at Crewe station and or the LNWR. We travel pass to / from Crewe to start / finish the jobs.

Liverpool and Manchester drivers sign all the way to Holyhead, Euston drivers sign to Chester and Preston drivers are in the process of learning Chester.

We at Wolves are the only Virgin depot that signs Central Rivers so all Virgin work that starts and finishes there is Wolves work.

are there any jobs that involve the train crew traveling as a passenger E.G from Euston to Preston or Manchester and if so how often dose this occur.

There used to be certain Preston crews that signed the settle route and Polmadie crews that did the Dumfries route but I don't know if that still happens
