I have a vague memory from when i was younger, in the early 1980s, of several times travelling in the late evening (after around 2200) between Hartlepool and Stockton in a train made up of carriages with compartments which was unusual because services at other times of day were not made up of such stock.

Does anyone know what this service may have been and why that stock was used in late evening? I can remember little else except for remembering that it looked like stock for an inter-city or cross-country service rather than a local one.

I travelled once or twice from Newcastle to Hartlepool - possibly a Saturday morning (but I'm not sure) in the early 70s on such a train - loco hauled Mk1 stock - a contrast to the more typical DMU on the route at the time. No doubt it was headed some distance away - London, probably.

This would have been the overnight sleeper from Newcastle via Sunderland to Kings Cross.
