Hello,

Looking to head to see the A4s at Shildon on either Saturday 15th or 22nd of February. We want to have around 5 hours at Shildon and leave Kings Cross sometime after 8am. Hopefully there will be 4 of us travelling.

Initial look at advances look like it'll cost around £100 each which seems a bit steep - can anybody do better?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried tickets from London to Darlington (then get the bus the remainder) as the trains up the Bishop Line are few and far between. Or even Grand Central to Eaglescliffe? :)

If you don't mind travelling a bit longer, you get it for £80.30 going via Leeds.

From what I can see on the East Coast website-
For 4 people, these are the advance fares-
Dep London 0800, Arr Shildon 1112- £137.80
Dep Shildon 1530, Arr London 1943- £137.80

That comes to £275.60, around £68.90 each.
There is an alternative return at 1809 arr 2250 but that is £172.60, coming to £310.40.

I've had a look at splits at Darlington and York to no avail, I'm sure someone else here will have something else to offer :)

If you require walk-up tickets:

KGX-PBO CDR 32.00
PBO-YRK GDR 46.80
YRH-SHD SVR 24.50*

Total £103.30 each, but you have to put up with calling at Peterborough both ways.
(approx £8 can be saved by splitting at Northallerton, if you can put up with that!)

This showed up as £172.60 for me, perhaps there is insufficient quota at the lower tier.

It seems to still show as the lower price for me.

How about
KGX-PBO day return (super off-peak, FCC only) £18.00
PBO-YRK day return (GDR) £46.80
YRK-Shildon day return £24.50

Total £89.30 each (with no fixed trains, allowing for flexibility) - does anyone know whether any of the above fares are eligible for GroupSave or EC small group discount?

Ah, you searched for the 22nd. I searched for the 15th.

Make it April (random date selected) and the price plummets to £79 (outward leg) and £43 (return leg) totalling £122.00 for the entire party for a return journey!

Needless to say I would not go in February!

I'd also recommend considering a trip on the Weardale Railway.

I think that the Weardale Railway is only offering themed lunch/tea/dinner trips starting in about June, and then Polar Express trips as Christmas approaches.

I've looked at their website, and they seem to only run premium trains. Will it no longer be possible for us to load our bikes on at Bishop Auckland in the morning and arrive at Stanhope around midday, having paid a reasonable single fare (was £5.50 I think)? It's not at all clear from their website, but I guess not.:|

Ive just had a quick look at Grandcentral to Eaglescliffe on the 22nd. You can go first class both ways for £43 Roughly 7 30 off the Cross and 6 10 back. if you return standard it was £32 obviously you have to get from Eaglescliffe to Shildon but if you were lucky you could get to travel on a 142 Dont google 142 it will spoil the surprise

Northern are putting on extra Trains between Darlington and Bishop the additions to the standard timetable is here
http://www.northernrail.org/offers/Exhibitions+and+Events/Locomotion,+the+National+Railway+Museum+at+Shildon

The extra train is Northern’s “Timothy Hackworth” (156438) so a good chance too miss a nodding donkey lol
