Good morning, all being well in a few weeks, I am booked to travel on RTCs Waverley & West Coast Rail's steam trains from York to Carlisle Via SCR & to Scarborough via West Yorkshire.

I think these trains recently commenced their summer services, does anyone know how they performed?

Thanks.

The Scarboro Spa has been 47 hauled every day so far due to fire risk/FBU strike.

The Waverley started on Sunday and was a pair of 37s to Hellifield, for 8F forward to Carlisle and a 47 back.

Did the 8f drop onto the train at Hellifield? The staff i spoke to on Sunday werent sure if it would or not. The 37's sounded fantastic storming away from Leeds!

I see from the Railway Touring Company's website that this Friday's Crewe-Scarborough Scarborough Flyer train has been cancelled due to the fire risk.

I'm told that it did.

For anyone interested, the loco for the SSE this week is 47580.

Thank you for your replies here. Hopefully by the time I am booked to travel, there will have been some moderate rainfall and the FBU dispute may be settled so the steam traction can happen, otherwise I hope they don't cancel the train but run them by diesel or with diesel assistance, although I would much prefer steam. The scenery is still good anyway, especially on the SCR.

I will look up times and fares on NR service trains just in case though, as I have trains & hotels booked to Yorkshire. (There used to be some type of Northern Day Rover, which I suppose would let me do a circle type trip, York, Newcastle, Carlisle, Leeds, York or VV and a Cheap day return York/Scarborough, unless the Coastliner bus is cheaper.)

On a separate note, I did see what looked liked a Black 4 or 5, hauling the inbound leg of RTCs Weymouth service into Waterloo last night, so some steam is happening on the mainline, I don't know how much help, if any, the diesel on the back was providing.

Has the Waverley steam train from York, SCR to Carlisle been fully or partly diesel hauled on recent weekends too?

Steam-hauled from Hellifield (as opposed to York) to Carlisle and return, with diesel assistance, last Sunday.

Only run one other Sunday, two weeks previously, with steam Hellifield to Carlisle, diesel on return.

Scarborough Spa Express

Due to the unusually dry conditions Network Rail
will not allow steam engines to run on the route of the Scarborough Spa Express for the remainder of the season.

We will continue to run a service on the same route with the same traditional carriages, it will be hauled by a Diesel Engine called “Seaside Flyer”. Other than steam the service remains unchanged, and we trust all passengers will thoroughly enjoy this unique experience.

All fares have been amended to reflect the change, please follow the link above to the “Seaside Flyer” to view full details.

So have they renamed a 47? Seems a bit tacky.

It's a very poorly written piece of text.

I think what it is meant to say is something along the lines of:

"We will continue to run a service on the same route with the same traditional carriages. The service, called the "Seaside Flyer", will be hauled by a heritage diesel locomotive. Other than the change from steam to diesel traction the service remains unchanged, and we trust all passengers will thoroughly enjoy this unique experience."

From a recent photo the loco seems to still be carrying the "Scarborough Spa Express" headboard if the date stamp on Flickr is correct, which if that is the case rather muddles the message.

I wonder with all the recent rain we have had lately, if the steam ban around York will be lifted and these two trains will be totally steam hauled, instead of partial / total diesel,?

Answering your query the Black Five made spirited station departures with the Dorset Coast Express to Weymouth on July 30th 2014. The engine looked in good condition. The rather dirty looking class 37 worked so hard on the rear that the down Beaulieu Road water stop was cancelled as not required for the Black Five and made up the 15 minutes time lost waiting on the Hounslow Loop for a path to Chertsey and Woking via Staines. The return climb through Upwey of 1 in 50 was easily made and Parkstone Bank 1 in 60 swept aside with this overpowered train. Peter Smith the famed S&D engineman, said that a Black Five with eight coaches in good weather could easily climb the Mendips 1 in 50 gradients.

I did the Waverley on Sunday, which was part diesel and part steam and the Scarborough train was diesel all they way on Monday, rather slow running around the west Yorkshire loop.

The Waverley was not as busy as I had thought it may be but I was surprised how full and busy the Scarborough train was.
