Is this ticket combination allowed or am I committing fraud?

Going back to my initial thread on the cheapest season ticket option from Harrow & Wealdstone to Epsom found here: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=113066

Long story short since then I have opted for the monthly season ticket zone 2-6 to Epsom (any route permitted) at £185.90 a month. It's the most practical, time saving route for me.

There are days when I only travel once or twice a week from HRW to EPS and the daily return ticket is £16.90. A thought has occurred to me, but I am wondering on the legal implications on the proposed ticket combination:

I can get a peak daily return ticket from Ewell West to Epsom for £3.80. Note, Ewell West is a London Zone 6 station. I can then use my oyster card to purchase a single Zones 2-5 fares at £2.80. Therefore my total for a daily return is £2.80 + £2.80 + £3.80 = £9.40.

Make the above into a monthly and Ewell West to Epsom is £45 and an oyster Zones 2-5 is £122.50, totalling £167.50.

Am I correct in making the assumption that as Ewell West is Zone 6 and my return ticket Ewell West to Epsom covers the Zone 6 area, plus my oyster covering 2-5 make it all zonal?

No, a point to point ticket from or to Ewell West is just that. A named station being 'in the zones' does not make it into a zonal ticket.

No, that would leave a gap between Ewell West and the 1st station in zone 5. When combining point to point and zonal tickets the point to point ticket needs to be to a station inside the area of the zonal ticket.

Well then, why can't I get a paper ticket Epsom to London zones 5-6 and get an oyster zones 2-4?

Can anyone please tell me the price for a Epsom zones 5-6 ticket? I can't seem to find it on the national rail season ticket calculator ?

If you put Epsom to Ewell East in the calculator it offers the travelcard version as the second option. You have to put the out boundary place in as the origin, it won't work the other way round. The price is £28.30/week.

And yes, a paper Epsom to 5-6 and a 1-4 on Oyster is a valid combination on all trains (fast or slow) via either Ewell station.

Travelcard Zones 2-4 is £26.60 so that is £54.90 per week. Translating that into monthlies that would cost you £210.90 (£108.70 + £102.20), so not actually saving you money.
