I will be using Northern Rail between Macclesfield and Stockport tomorrow but on the way back i need to get of at Adlington then back to Macclesfield.

So can i do this on 1 day Rtd ticket between Macclesfield and Stockport with a break on way back?

What are the rules on this?

As I understand it break of journey is permitted on the return journey, no doubt one of the experts will be along to confirm this or otherwise...
Yesterday I broke my journey at Leeds on a Bramley to Cottingley single, not sure if I was strictly speaking supposed to but the gateline staff at Leeds didn't pull me up on it.

Break of journey is always permitted on the return portion of a rail-only ticket. For the outward journey and singles, it depends on the ticket:

Advances don't permit break of journey
Anytimes always do.
Off-peak and super off-peak you need to check the restriction code. In the case of Macclesfield to Stockport you're fine anyway.

Even if you were on an advance, they would have to let you through as the vast majority of retail outlets at Leeds are on the public side of the barriers.

The title for this thread made me think that somebody had tried to leave a moving train in the middle of nowhere...

I must admit I was thinking the same until I saw what section it was in! I've made a small edit to clear things up for everyone :)

To the OP: If you want to know for sure we know exactly what ticket is held but otherwise the advice above gives the broad outline.

I don't know what a 1 day Rtd ticket is, but yes you can do this.
What are the rules on this?
It is very rare that break of journey restrictions apply, and when they do apply you will be told about it when you buy the ticket. The NRCoC states:
You can:
Start, break or resume your journey using trains on which your ticket is valid unless you are told about particular restrictions that apply to the use of your ticket.

If you aren't told about any restriction when you buy the ticket, how would you prove that to a guard/RPI? I mean, it seems too open to abuse IMO.

That's true, but I was still surprised to not be challenged by the rather haughty gateline staff. I went through the manned gates both ways as I'm guessing that the barriers would simply spit the ticket back out! I was tempted to see if my zones 2-5 Mcard would work the gates (which it obviously shouldn't!) but didn't want to cause more congestion!

I'm not sure if you can break your journey once your ticket has been retired? (Rtd. = Retired?) :p

Probably a typographical error for Rtn. (Return?). If so then no worries as you can break with that ticket.

I don't see how breaking your journey is "abuse", and the NRCoC makes it very clear that we can break our journey unless told we can't.

If a break of journey was such a bad thing to do, the NRCoC wouldn't say that.

Anyway, the NRCoC says what it says and people can make up their own minds.

But the retail code of practice says that passengers will be told if they can break a journey...
