Any new services planned North of Corby along the Harringworth Viaduct?

More freight is likely to go that way following the doubling of the Kettering to Corby section that is currently under way. The work at Manton Junction was part of the Strategic Freight Network initiative.

With no plans to electrify between Corby and Syston Junction it is unlikely that there will be many more passenger trains that way, other than diversions, e.g. during Leicester re-modelling.

Hi.
There was work at Manton Jn and indeed all the way from Peterborough to Syston a few years ago. That was all for more freight to use the route. Theres only been a handful of extra freights added since then.
As far as i can see, theres not much freight on the MML at the best of times. Freight moves like the Churchyard Ketton Cement from St. Pancras would still need to go via Leicester as theres no curve at Manton Jn to head back to Ketton.
Having said that, i did hear a rumour that they were considering making Manton a triangular junction. I think the main reason for doubling Kettering to Corby was panic if a train fails at Corby station and blocks the diversion route!

I find the statement in bold a bit odd. Whenever I've been travelling from Wellingborough to London there seems to be no shortage of freight using the slows. And ahead of the evening peak I've seen a couple stopped outside Bedford awaiting the evening peak to clear before being allowed onto the southern section of the MML.

Hi.
Ive just checked out Realtime trains for freight today at Harrowden Jn, a trainspotters haven, and theres lots of 'runs as required' between 8am and 13.00pm. As far as i can see, theres less than 5 that will definately run. Not exactly busy in my eyes!
Im sure there may be more freight further south but we were talking about freight and traffic between Kettering and Leicester. Thats why trainspotters dont go to Cossington as much. Apart from the Mountsorrel traffic, it aint as busy as the WCML.

The challenge is slotting the freight amongst a fairly intensive passenger service, even if it isn't as busy as the WCML it is still difficult to slot any extra services into the timetable. Hence upgrading via Corby can allow diverting freight from the long two track section between Kettering and just South of Leicester, allowing more freight to run if need be in the future.

The MML has been formally designated as 'congested infrastructure'. Essentially this means that Network Rail has had to decline applications for paths from freight operators.

Unlike the WCML the MML is not almost entirely four-track. Also the freights are mainly 60mph Class 6, at least in the loaded, southbound direction, so 125mph Meridians catch them up very quickly.

And if a triangle junction was made at Manton junction which was never there originally for some reason, If the old formation from East of Stamford was put back to the ECML via Belmesthorpe which would only involve a house and some bridge work on the formation save for reinstatement of track bed and signalling, access North from MML to ECML would be possible

I doubt that's justifiable given the likely use of the line - you're not likely to get alot of services running from north of the ECML wanting to get onto the southern section of the MML.

If it were needed it looks like there is open land near the current junction - it would probably be far cheaper and easier to put a chord in there than reinstating a long-closed route out of Stamford.
