Greetings !
I'm travelling on two Advance tickets from Glasgow Central (GLC) to High Wycombe (HWY) ; these are GLC to Birmingham New St. (BHM) and Birmingham Moor St. (BMO) to HWY. I have allowed 38 minutes to make it across to BMO . The GLC train arrives into BHM at *:05 and the BMO train departs at *:43. If the arrival into New St. was significantly delayed and I missed my connection would I be entitled to catch the next train or would Chiltern argue that the "cross over time" that I allowed was far too short ?

Thanks.

(Ooops - Sorry mods I posted this in the wrong forum.Could you kindly correct my mistake)

BIRMINGHAM NEW STREET is classified as a LARGE interchange station.Minimum Connection Time is 12 minutes.

BIRMINGHAM MOOR STREET is classified as a MEDIUM interchange station.Minimum Connection Time is 5 minutes.

FIXED LINKS Hide this
BIRMINGHAM NEW STREET
WALK 24 hours 8 minutes
12 + 5 + 8 = 28 minutes.

So 38 minutes is a valid connection.

You could obtain an itinerary on NRE and print that out, as evidence that the trains and itinerary are valid for your through journey.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
Also if your not overly well jenned up on the route then a smartphone and google maps would be handy seeing as you dont have a huge amount of time for a leasurely strol.

Also note that unless your a sucker to branded outlets e.g Costa then a delicious and good value coffee can be bought from the place on the concourse at BMO

As you have allowed the minimum connection times between the two stations as Yorkie has pointed out above, if your first train is delayed or cancelled, you are entitled to take the next available train. In the event of disruption I would simply explain that the first train was delayed causing you to miss the connection and that should be enough for them to simply allow onward travel.

Fishquinn has reportedly done it in around 3 minutes, but I'd guess not many forum members could run as fast as him. But, yes, 10 mins is all a reasonably fit person without much luggage should need, platform-to-platform!

It certainly is possible, with some fortuitous changing of the pedestrian crossings. I've never had the need to run between the two, but I can walk it in around 5-6 mins.

I did it in 4 once. At least, my train into moor st arrived four minutes before the one out of new street was due to depart —*I think there was a minute or two of delay on the latter, which probably made all the difference!

It involved shoving past a tourist who didn't understand slam-door trains, running as fast as I could as soon as the doors were unlocked, and at the New Street end, rushing down the stairs and leaping onto a Voyager as the hustle alarm was sounding. I don't recommend it if you don't have to!

Maybe the forum should set a competition (with official timekeepers) to see who can do it the quickest...

Have a handicap system, where the younger members have heavier luggage to carry.

Quite right. Although, even in my advancing years, I've twice caught a -1 minute connecting service to Lewes from Gatwick to avoid a half an hour wait watching the planes go by. I did startle some heavily baggage-laden customers the last time I did it though!

Yup. He ran off the 170? I was on at New Street and texted me the 168 unit number he was on around 3/4 minutes later!

Ahh... but running on platforms, stairs/escalators and concourses is dangerous. As signs and posters (and the occasional PA) at many stations tell us. ;)

Is that the little kiosk after the ticket barriers or the larger coffee shop before the barriers?

Does it have to be a train with the same TOC? I've missed connections at Milton Keynes and always waited for the next Virgin train, even though there were LM trains going to my destination.

For extra fun, have people doing the challenge in both directions at once.

Officially yes, but in case of delay, there's nothing to lose by asking booking office/train staff before boarding if you can hop on.

Taking the general case, that depends on the ticket(s) held, naturally. If the tickets are restricted to a specific TOC then, as far as a very long thread was able to determine, there is nothing that gives you a clear, unambiguous entitlement to travel on trains provided by any other TOC.

If your ticket doesn't carry any such restriction then you are entitled to be conveyed by the next suitable train irrespective of the operator.

Since, in the OP's scenario, since they are Advance tickets then they likely are operator restricted.

That's one of the most bizarre things I've seen!

The closest thing we've done was a multi-modal race from Putney Pier to Blackfriars Pier (cycling won, and Uber lost!) and I'm sure we'll do another soon. Not sure about a race on foot though as I suspect many of our members wouldn't be up for that, though I am a pretty fast runner/walker when I want to be ;)

A bit of a grey area. I wouldn't like to give a generic answer for all journeys! I'd seek assistance from station staff (or on train staff) if practicable to see what is suggested.

There's also the secret platform 1 entrance towards Millenium place which misses out the main entrance, footbridge and the hoards.

Moorish on the concourse, I suspect. The after barrier place is OK and if you want hot food the Centenary Lounge isn't bad but Moorish have very good coffee.

I regularly make a connection off 17:21 CRE-BHM to the 18:31 BMO-SRI which considering the 17:21 is often a couple down at New Street and it comes in on the horrid platform 4c, isn't bad going.

Yesterday I managed to make the 07:15 BHM-CRE having arrived at BMO on the 06:59 ex SRI. That was a fairly close run thing.

a smartphone and google maps

Or a better map application. ;)

Pre-Bullring - and when I was much younger and fitter - I did New Street to Moor Street in around three minutes in early 2002. I could date it fairly exactly because I was coming back from reporting on the opening of the Falkirk Wheel. The (loco-hauled) XC service had sat down and wept at Haymarket: it eventually got going again, but my connection to an Oxford train and then the last train to Charlbury was clearly not going to happen.

On the way into Wolverhampton I borrowed a GBRTT from a table of bashers in the next carriage, and figured I had an outside chance of making a Chiltern service from Moor Street. I managed a creditable sprint only to arrive on the platform just as the doors had closed... oh ****.

Fortunately, the guard took pity on me and let me in through the rear cab. A friend picked me up from Banbury. :)

In the case of an Advance ticket it should be on the next train according to the train company restrictions shown on your ticket. If it is an Any Permitted routed ticket then it can be the next train regardless of operator.

Which journey have you been making when you have missed your connection at MKC and what tickets have you held?
