Jean Alexander passed away this week so it's been reported on the BBC, she was 90 and had starred in one of the longest running drama programmes in the UK (Coronation Street) then after leaving that, appeared again on one of the longest running comedy shows, (Summer Wine), plus other well know programmes such as Heartbeat, she also appeared in some films. She won several awards and but was a very private, unassuming person.

Another sad loss to the world of entertainment but she reached a good age and was loved and admired by so many people. RIP Jean.

As a Coronation Street fan I agree she will be missed.

Never got married and lived to a ripe old age !!!

I loved watching her when I was younger, she reminds me of my Aunty with her portrayal of Northern working class woman it was just right. Sadly missed.

I remember her portrayal of junk emporium-owner Auntie Wainwright in "Last of the Summer Wine" bringing many a smile and chuckle. R.I.P.

My uncle was a commuter on the Blackpool – Manchester line in the 1960s and 70s and he told us “Hilda Ogden” was a regular on his morning train to work.

Apparently at the time Jean Alexander travelled daily from the posh seaside town of Lytham into Manchester – in First Class (there were through trains to Manchester from Blackpool South back in those days and the BRCW DMUs had First Class accommodation)

As a youngster I thought this was a bit incongruous – this was when I learned that actors are not necessarily anything like the characters they portray!

I thought she lived in Southport ? maybe she moved. I read her autobiography years ago, it was very interesting.

Wikipedia certainly says Jean Alexander lived in Southport for many years and of course she passed away in Southport Hospital. My uncle’s comment about her commuting from Lytham would have been in the late 1960s – perhaps that was where she lived back then (a quick Google search neither confirms nor contradicts this).

While my uncle claimed to have commuted on the same train as JA, he would not have been one of her immediate travelling companions. He was a thrifty Scot and didn’t indulge in extravagances like a First Class season ticket.

Ha Ha, like that last comment. I liked those DMUs you mention, I think they were the ones that if you were lucky you could sit up front and look forwards through the drivers cab, so long as he did not pull the blind down.

Funnily enough, I may be travelling in the Wigan/Southport area next week and may be going a train from Wigan towards Southport, do they still use pacers/nodding donkeys on that route now?
