Evening all.

Taking the boy to Edinburgh next weekend (Sat 28th) for 3-4 hours or so. I'm rather bored (he isn't!) with the usual McDonalds/Burger King type of fayre so looking for somewhere nearby, I was maybe looking for something like a Scottish Breakfast given we'll be there about 11am or so. With all of those side streets, i'm sure there is a hidden gem.

Has anyone any suggestions? As long as it's not too far away from the station itself, thats where he wants to be for the majority of the time.

Thanks in advance.

Henderson's is a well-established vegetarian café that does good food. To find it, walk straight down Princes Street due west until you find Hanover Street, then turn right down that and keep walking, crossing George Street in the process, until you find Henderson's on your left.

There's very good food available to non-residents at the Scotsman Hotel which is literally right above the station on the south side; it's a two level restaurant and from the upper level you have an excellent view of the station. As a bonus, the restaurant itself is very impressive from the architectural point of view.

Not sure what their cut-off time between breakfast and lunch is, but it's certainly open morning till night.

There's a great greasy spoon called Snax, which is behind the Apple store, which is directly opposite the Balmoral hotel next to Waverley Steps.
Typical greasy spoon cafe, no great view of the world from the window, but good honest food.
Only has seating for about 4 or 5 people, so it could get a bit crammed, depending on what time you go there

Vegetarian Breakfast in Scotland ??? - you must be kidding :p

Don't miss out on the wonderful Black Pudding and Haggis available in Auld Reekie along with square sausage and other delicious meat based delicacies.

There are literally scores of eateries within a stones throw of Waverley.

Not at all, I know from experience.

Off-topic I know, but will you meat-eaters please stop bashing vegetarian food? Whether you're serious or not, we're all a bit fed up* of being told by carnivorous others that we're wrong not eating meat and that we're all self-obsessed arrogant hipsters with no muscular strength who can't take a simple joke when the same could easily be said of all the people who boast about having eaten grasshoppers and placenta and foie gras and beef testicles and ragù of curried elk entrails and the like. I could rant for days about this, so you'd be wise not to make me.

*not with meat, obviously. ;)

[My bolding]

As a vegetarian I can categorically state that I couldn't care less with what other people's perceptions of vegetarian foods are and that you do not speak for me as one on this point. By your reaction you seem to somewhat prove the point you are attempting to disprove that vegetarians cannot take a joke.

To all the meat-eaters out there, please carry on, the day anyone cannot take a joke about food is the day we may as well all give up.

I think you're just proving them right. Twice in this thread you've failed to take a joke. Fell free to make as many jokes about non-vegetarians as you like if you eventually find your sense of humour.

I'm inclined to agree, it works both ways however, people who do eat meat should expect jokes that way too.

Back on topic, i hope your trip went well, i've never visited Snax despite passing through / visiting and often having time to kill in Edinburgh a number of times per year so i'd be interested in your views to put with everyone elses.

The trip was good, he enjoyed it which was the main thing, although the weather was terrible.

He was still adamant that he wanted Burger King and wanted it on arrival, so we went straight in there and he got what he wanted. I held off and we then went to Snax which was fairly busy and there was nowhere to sit. I got a Bacon, Egg & Mushroom roll to take away and it was very nice, plenty in it too. The only issue was the bun getting soggy as we walked down the the park!

Thankyou for the recommendations!
