I no longer drive since my stroke in 2012 and one of my sons now has my old Range Rover. Patricia, at the age of 75, has a Land Rover Discovery 3.0 SDV6 Landmark, but has been warned not to drive until the 12 week post-operative meeting with her consultant next Thursday, after having a hip replacement operation on 30th March.

15 Octavia 1.4tsi estate. Huge amount of space and fabulous engine - fast but economical. Mid 50s mpg on a motorway run with acceleration to embarass some bigger names.

Very similar to me - I have the 16 plate with the same engine.

I tried to get a Seat Leon ST (also with a 1.4 TSI) because the deals on new models of that car through brokers were excellent, but the factory lead time was huge. So I went for the similar-but-slightly-roomier Octavia Estate nearly new and am very pleased with it. Brilliant family car.

Just wondering if we could have some kind of general chit chat about cars, a Top Gear thread if you will.

What are people driving? pet hates and loves, opinions on cars and other drivers, that kinda thing really.

I'll start, currently driving a 1.8 diesel 52 plate 4 door Ford Focus and I love it. Despite initially being sluggish on the acceleration, once it's past 30mph, the revs are up and the turbo kicks in, it'll give most modern petrol saloons a run for their money. You can chuck it round corners pretty well too.

My pet hates with driving are: crossover SUVs, big ugly road tumours that seem to be driven by very angry, short women, with dyed blonde/black hair, huge sunglasses and are full of aggresson until they need to drive round a bend ...

Chav on finance cars, usually some neon bogie coloured 1.0 thing, that sits up my backside whilst I'm doing 30mph in a residential area until I join a road where I can do 40 mph +, then they're dead in the water, and BMW drivers; usually driven by chavs on finance again, after they've knackered their neon bogie or the usual middle managers who can't satisfy their crossover SUV driving wive so take out their aggression by driving like a git.

BMW 520 E39, 2000. 176,000 miles and counting. Bodywork is getting a little tatty, but mechanically it's pretty good, albeit comparatively expensive to maintain. Only had to be recovered twice in 17 years. Like the car so much I'm reluctant to replace it, even if economically that would probably be marginally more cost-effective.

Pet hates - other people who can't drive correctly. It's *so* frustrating going from driving a train, where you're sharing your "road" with competent professionals, to the actual road which is full of total incompetent idiots who are so below-par that they should never have a licence in the first place - especially in the London / south east area.

I'm in the process of buying an Audi TT Roadster 03 plate. What's more I was most surprised at how "low" the best insurance quote was. Especially when you take into account I've been off the road for 25 years and have some reported health issues [hence I have a restricted 3 year license] it was £666[.53]. So the Beast <D is about to hit the road again! The main reason behind my bing off the road was costs and time running away with getting back. It being a case of tomorrow.....

We have a 2008 Toyota Auris, after getting rid of our rickety Kia Rio. I have to say, it's not bad.

My dream car is a Range Rover, full size or the Evoque.

I drive a 62 plate Volvo V40 SE LUX NAV, D2 (1.6tdi). Lovely car, full of toys, quiet, comfortable, drives it self if needs be (adaptive cruise control :D).

Living in Burton, volunteering in Bury with family/girlfriend in Lincoln, something tank-like was definitely needed!

Not planning on changing it any time soon, although the new shape XC60 is extremely nice; a more achievable dream than the new XC90 :P

The car I do most of my driving in is my dads, a 2004 Vauxhall Meriva. It's not a bad car, and having been the one that I learnt to drive in, it's taken a few dings. I've started coming around to it though after making a 12 hour drive in it to the south of France (and back) - so much so that I'm doing it again!

The other car that I drive occasionally is my mums, a 2012 VW Touran - which is generally a nicer car, more solidly put together, better fuel efficiency, automatic, modern perks such as cruise control and an aux cable, etc.

Aaaaaaand someone hit my car today :( didn't leave a note but some nice person in the car park kindly gave me their number and will act as a witness.

The guy came back (I waited) denied everything but back pedalled when I said I'd call the police and speak to my witness.

Thankfully just a scratch (now buffed out a bit but I can still see it !!) no dent.

Brand new mota, less than 4 months old. !""$£$£$!£$%£!ards

I'm not into cars. They are a means to get me from A to B. I've an 05 Suzuki Alto and do about 4,000 a year. Occasionly I'm used by my daughter as "Dads Taxi". I cycle if I can.

My most recent motor was a 1.4 Citroen Zsara which cost me nowt (dad's hand-me-down) and served me well until the MOT bill rendered it beyond economic repair. I think the best car I ever had was a 1.0 L-plate Micra which, after the initial £250 clutch replacement (bloody town drivers), cost me buttons to insure and about £25 a month in fuel for a 22-mile daily trip to work and back.

Pet hates? Those oversized BMWs that look like a Tonka toy. And those cars that don't seem to have any indicators.

An excellent choice. I bet it drives like a car with 1/3 of the mileage and age?

That generation of BMWs really were built to last. The E46 3 and E39 5 series still look the business and there are quite a few of them still about.

By contrast you hardly ever see Mercs of a similar vintage. Most have long since dissolved into piles of rust!

In my experience, generally those with German heritage!

Currently driving a 63 plate Toyota Auris 1.4 D4D which replaced an 07 plate model of the same car. Might not have the "prestige" of some other makes, but it works for what we need.

Haven't got a car myself yet (Looking at Merc A Class, or more a Mazda 3 Sport Nav)

But insured and drive my Dad's 2016 Ford Kuga Titanium X Sport (180PS) Auto, Do love the car as nice and easy to drive and park as well. Fact it's auto' has just made me want one for myself tbh, as feel better to drive/ allows to pay more attention to the road. The Auto Park function is cool as well, but a bit limited and dimwitted though.

Although it has been a unlucky car though, Hit once by a stolen car, whilst parked outside the house. (Front right wing/ trim, door, door hinges, lower sill) All replaced, Alloy resurfaced (But most likely Alloygators saved it)

Hit once at a Vet's car park, Most likely by a Grey Nissan Leaf. And some lovely person dented the back, by whacking it or with something above the ford badge on the boot. Last two, being done without insurance, due to cost being cheaper then excess.

I must confess, I've yet to see any modern car, of German origin or otherwise, that lacks indicators. Current high spec Audis even incorporate a directional indicator "flick", progressively illuminating the indicator towards the intended direction of travel.

I'm sure the Auris does the business. What MPG are you getting, out of interest?

As I dont wish to contribute to the death of the planet more than I have to I have never learnt to drive.

<sheepish>
However, that has not stopped me poncing lifts off people, especially when a country pub is involved.

I think the issue is a lot of newer cars have a lane change indicator function as well as the normal operation. On both my BMW and Vauxhall pushing the stalk gently gives 5 flashes, or pushing it heavily gives a full indicator operation until cancelled (either by steering through it or manually). I've often pushed it not hard enough and inadvertently used the lane change function instead of full indicator.

In the family have a dull as dishwater 2007 Vauxhall Meriva 1.6 & a 2001 VW polo 1.4 with a massive 60bhp.
Both have just hit 70,000 trouble free miles.
Neither car has broke down in our ownership & both cost peanuts to run.
The Meriva is dull & boring BUT is massive inside. I'm 6ft 4 & there's room aplenty behind me.
Car full, roofbox & 2 mountain bikes it does about 42mpg on trips to Cornwall.
The polo sits at 70 all day long & will do the 300 miles to my brothers on just over half a tank.
Both cost about £140 per year to service & about £340 to tax.
Both boring maybe but I won't be replacing them yet just to keep up with the neighbours like everyone else does.

If the drivers decide to use them though!

The amount of drivers I see changing lanes without signalling each day is unbelievable; and they do seem to be mainly BMW / Audi / Mercedes cars.

The Auris tends to give me about 55 mpg according to the onboard computer - this is based on mainly a 12 mile each way commute that is about 10 miles motorway and 2 miles urban driving.

The old one (petrol) was around the 35 mark for the same journey.
