On the TPE app you can now see how busy the carriages are on TPE trains, if you go to 'live times' on the app and search for a TPE train. Am guessing this is new for TPE trains

It's fairly useful if nothing else to show the formation.

It's unclear which services do or do not show it though, or where the data comes from.

Some of the data seema rather optimistic.

I presume with modern detection technology this system will be able to tell you where the optimum piece of floor to stand on is, so you can avoid standing for 1 1/2 hrs with someone’s suitcase rammed into your knee.

I assume its based on either the number of reservations, or passenger load weighing, since 185's don't have seat scanning like LNER.

TPE have also introduced 10 minute reservations from today, but again because the 185's don't have an electronic reservation system (unlike the XC fleet) its done with special (purple) seat reservation labels which just say "This seat may be reserved during the journey" or similar. Only a very limited number of seats are available to reserve this way (via their website) - just 6 in coach B at the opposite end to the toilet and 1 in first class. If the XC system is bad, this is worse, since anybody sitting there will not know if the seat has been reserved until someone comes up to claim it. Much potential for conflicts there.

In my miserable experience of using TPE between Manchester and Leeds this is completely superfluous. Going east at any time in the morning, or back any time from mid-afternoon to early evening they are all about 120% loaded.
Unfortunately I have to go across the Pennines to York on Sat 29th Dec. I have got reserved seats, but to be honest I shall be grateful just to get on board the trains!
I'm not surprised that someone has told us that TPE ridership has dropped off a cliff. There is a saying about "polishing a turd!" (You can't)

This is how XC do it on Turbostars, and in my experience it causes nothing but trouble.

Nova 2 and 3 have passengers counting systems giving real time information back to TPE. I’m told it was mandated to both TPE and Northern by the DFT for a more accurate distribution of fare money to the TOCs and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s started to be fitted to 185.

I've noticed that they have had the passenger counting equipment replaced. Some units seem to have it provided at gangways between the carriages.

Sounds like they have gone with the Acorel system fitted to the CAF trains

Never mind all this nonsense - just tell passengers waiting on the platform whether coach A is at the front or the back.

They mostly do that anyway, but it would be really useful if they actually got it right! My last experience was the 1727 Stansted to Birmingham shown incorrectly at Peterborough 10 days ago (XC at fault.)

All designed with the new trains in mind as accurate information will be more readily available.

Never happens on TPE. You have to peer through the gloom looking for the little flash of yellow to figure it out for yourself.

I'd love it if the technology was smart enough to provide this line for each train, probably the most telling loading stat for any TPE service:

'12 passengers holding Standard Class tickets sitting or standing in First Class, whether in desperation or trying it on.'
