Classic Shirehorses - Although my favourite of theirs was "You're Gormless" .

I rather like Phil Collins' version of "You Can't Hurry Love".

Wrong thread, this should be in Worst Song Covers ever as "Travis covering The Shirehorses' Why is it Always Dairylea" ;)

Anyway;

Yo La Tengo - Take Care (originally by Big Star)

John Cale - Hallelujah (originally by Leonard Cohen, prefer this one to the Jeff Buckley version too)

Look, I admit I don't know A-ha's version, but I cannot believe it's better than the original by the Everlys, which would have to be on my Desert Island Discs list. Even better was seeing them in the flesh performing it when they were at the height of their powers, and a little-known band the Rolling Stones were way below them on the bill

Personally I think the A-HA version has a lot more power to it and thus works better, the Blancmange cover of ABBA's "The Day Before You Came" is not necessarily any better it's just good, even ABBA themselves thought so and thus allowed Blancmange to use parts of their video.
also another good cover is Pet Shop Boys "Always On My Mind", a fine rendition of this Elvis classic.

Another planet...
You have to see them live to get the full experience, but Half Man Half Biscuit will occasionally regale their audiences with their take on "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany. They're not that big on covers, but their version of Edith Piaf's "No Regrets" is worth a listen.

Absolutely banging cover.

Special mentions to Jimmy Eat World's cover of Firestarter and Oysterband's cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Vic Reeves and The Wonderstuff - Dizzy.
Fantastic cover. I saw Vic and Bob on tour at Newcastle City Hall mot long after they released this as a single and they played this as an encore. need less to say we as a crowd went bananas.
As an aside, i have thoroughly enjoyed going through the songs i have not heard before on Spotify. So far my personal fave has been the Alanis Morrisette Crazy song.

Yes indeed. I was very happy to see "The Stuff" live a few years ago. They were with "The Levellers" and they both gave a bloody good gig !

A few first ideas.
"I Know I'm Losing You" by Rare Earth (rock version of original by The Temptations)

Rare Earth also did a pretty good rock covers of "I Heard It Through The Gravevine" (cannot find anywhere on line) and "Get Ready".

"With A Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker
One of the few occasions where someone bettered the Beatles version.

Govt Mule have also done some good covers of the same song, although the sound quality on the internet sometimes seems like it was recorded on a cheap mobile phone> This one has vocals by Dana Fuchs:
