Using both paper tickets and Oyster, is it possible to buy a Zones 1 to 6 travelcard then get a extension to Zone 8 bearing in mind the station of origin is outside the London Zones.

From reading on here, it appears that TOCs can only issue Z1 to 6 travelcards while LU don't have that issue.

So if I was travelling from Luton, Stevenage or Milton Keynes and I wanted a ticket that enabled travel between Zones 1 to 8 how would I go about it?

Using both Oyster and Paper Travelcards as I believe that there are some fares as been discussed on here which highlight that the paper ones are cheaper then the Oyster ones?

In general, get a ticket from your origin station to Boundary Zone 6, then a Brentwood to London Zones 6, AAA Zones 7-9 Day Travelcard. Both tickets can be issued at a staffed booking office.

From Milton Keynes, it may be worth investigating doing the split at Watford Jn instead. This may well depend on the time of travel.

The destination is always Zones 1-6.

If you buy one with an origin of e.g. Watford High Street, Zones 7-9 will be included (in the route field)

You'd need to purchase a combination of tickets.

Are you talking about Off Peak Day Travelcards? These cannot be loaded onto Oyster.

So even if I'm travelling from Bedford with the intention of travelling around London and heading up to Chingford and Cheshunt via Southbury for example using the above example even if I'm going nowhere near Brentwood, the combo will still be valid?

To clarify I would like to travel off peak where possible, just thought of travelling around London for the day.

You can't purchase Stevenage - London Zones 1-8 travelcard. If you want to travel into Zone 8 you have the following options:

1. Buy a Stevenage - London Zones 1-6 travelcard and a Boundary Zone 6 ticket to your ultimate destination (this would only be valid for one journey from the boundary to your destination.
2. But a Stevenage - London Zones 1-6 travelcard and use Oyster PAYG/Contactless between the last station in Zone 6 and your destination. You would need to leave the train to tap in/out at the last station in Zone 6.
3. Buy a Stevenage - London Terminals Day Return and use Oyster PAYG/Contactless for your travel to your destination.
4. Buy something like an Amersham - London Zones 1-6 (AAA Zones 7-9) travelcard and combine Stevenage - Boundary Zone 6 tickets to travel from/to Stevenage.

You don’t say where in zone 8 you want to go. If it is on a London bus route as many are, the bus journey will be covered by a zones 1-6 Travelcard even though are travelling outside both London and zone 6. Example Dartford.

If only they would allow you to pay an excess fare on touching out, like on Oyster travelcards. ITSO PAYG may allow this in the future, I hope?

You would still need to touch in if travelling outside the zones of your Travelcard otherwise you would be liable for a maximum fare or worse if you meet an RPI. If starting outside the Oyster zones you would just need a ticket to the boundary of the outer zone on your Travelcard and then you could touch out without having touched in.

Of course you need to touch in with Oyster. Just saying that you can touch in at, say, Fenchurch Street with a Zones 1-4 travelcard and touch out at Upminster and it will deduct the excess fare. Very convenient because you wouldn't need to get off at Barking, touch out and wait for the next train.

But since the travelcard is a paper one, the OP would need to touch in somewhere on their Oyster if they wanted to do that way. Which means having to touch in at the boundary station, possibly missing one train.
