Hello folks,

I’m curious to see what kind of roles people were in before they joined the railway, particularly drivers and guards.

It’d be interesting to see if there are any roles that stand out as more common or perhaps some that come as more unexpected career changes.

I’m currently not a railway member but I am in due process, hoping to get there, nonetheless my background is in electrical estimation.

Retail Management, Delivery Van Driver; currently working as a guard which I really do enjoy, and should be on a trainee train drivers course by the end of this year! :)

I wouldn't choose to work anywhere but the railways anymore. The job markets best kept secret...

I was at collage learning motor vehicle studies and working part time on the railway then went full time in 1998 and been here ever since , in that time I've been platform staff covering everything you can think of and been a guard since 2005

I'm just about to start my journey on the railways. I start my training for a conductor on 15th April and I have never been so excited about a job like this before. I am leaving my job of 10 years as a shift manager in Royal Mail. Big step for me as that was pretty much all my working life and I am very settled with my routines but I just can't turn down the chance to work on the railways!

I was a mechanic for a few years, then security work. Joined the railway in 2006 in an enforcement/policing type role. Now looking to be a driver and wish I’d not faffed about so much and done it sooner, would have been much less hassle. Currently in a talent pool for GWR and crossing my fingers!

Military - HGV driver - train driver. Since leaving the forces I’ve been made redundant 5 times and jumped ship once before being made redundant a sixth, best choice I ever made moving to the railway.

I remember having a conversation with you on a well known car site about becoming a train driver. Finally done it and start in a weeks time. Do you still have the two old girls?
