Hello all,

Having gone out to see the Great Britain XII Railtour today (Day 8), I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts / information which they would like to express here, or maybe people would just like to talk about the railtour.
I'll start the conversation by mentioning the fact that today's railtour was two hours late by the time it reached Banbury (where I waited for over two hours to see it) and was cancelled between Reading and London Paddington. I know why the railtour was delayed; it was due to trespassers on the line between Derby and Birmingham (according to the BBC News). However, I am unsure why the railtour was cancelled beyond Reading apart from the line on RTT saying that there was a fault with the engine ("Flying Scotsman").
If anyone has any ideas on this subject, or if they just want to talk about the subject, then please go ahead. Or tell me if this is a rubbish idea and is in the wrong sub-forum.

The railtour (1Z31) continued to lose time. It passed Oxford 171 minutes late. It was booked to wait on the Up & Down road just south of Oxford, I guess to take water. Instead it went to Hinksey sidings. A diesel 0Z31 came down to meet it there (don't know where from). The diesel assisted (or took over?) for the final run to Reading. At Reading, were passengers just told to cram into regular trains on to Paddington, and would GWR have carried them without tickets? Anyone know what now ails 60103?

Proceeded to Hinksey as they couldn't get the water bowser close to the line alongside the UDG as a block of flats is being built there.

Dragged to Reading and failed due to injector failure. It had dropped out earlier on but the travelling fitters had revived it. By Oxford the Driver decided it wasn't fit to continue unaided.

For onward carriage WCRC will have asked GWR for ticket acceptance. GWR of course are under no obligation to agree (with this being a private charter rather than a regular public service) but usually do

Thanks everyone for the information. How the diesel which @Nicholas43 mentions got there is anyone's guess. As Oxford is one of my nearest "big" stations, I go there very often and I can say that there is never normally just an engine in the sidings. If the headcode was 0Z31, I'm sure we can track down where it came from based on sensible assumptions; e.g. it could only have come from a nearby yard, maybe Long Marston, although maybe it's too far away.

EDIT: I wonder if the TOPS Requests thread on here would be able to help if I gave the headcode, destination, and date. I'll have a go.

The rescue loco (37668) ran light through Cholsey at 18:15 so might have come down from Southall.

The GB tour has a standby loco follow it for occasions such as this.

Oh OK. However, looking at Google Maps that is a long distance for an engine to travel. But on the other hand, if that's the only place to get an engine from, then it will have to do I suppose!

Any of the (non trespassing) photters around the Trent & Mersey canal bridge near Stenson Junction get a shot of a green 40 footer passing under the line at around 1300? That was me :D
