I’ve been given an interesting challenge which I thought would be simple, New Eltham to London Bridge for a group of three adults and twelve children, departing on a Friday off peak (6pm) returning the following evening on Saturday. No railcards and due to the logistics of 12 children from different families, the option of ensuring each has a child rate Oyster with sufficient credit has been ruled out as not feasible so paper tickets only. All will be travelling together in both directions.

There are no period returns available on this flow, so the basic cost of singles in each direction appears to be 3x 5.50 plus 12x 2.75 making a total round trip of £99.

Groupsave appears to be available for the adult fares, so this can be reduced to 3x 3.65 plus 12x 2.75 making a total round trip of £87.90.

I then remembered that SouthEastern offer kids for a quid, but this isn’t available from within the Oyster area, so I looked at the first station outside the zone, which is Stone Crossing. I can get singles from there, with a groupsave for 3x 6.65 plus 12x 1.00 each way which makes a total round trip of £63.90. As these are standard anytime singles, no problem starting short at New Eltham.

There does appear to be a cheaper option which is Stone Crossing Weekender return, which allows travel on Friday and return on Saturday or Sunday. The return fare is 3x 11.80 plus 12x 1.00 making a total of £47.40. However this has a restriction of no break of journey on the outward leg, which I believe rules out starting short at New Eltham?

Does anyone have any more imaginative ideas, or advice on whether the Weekender ticket could be used to start short?

New Eltham isn’t gated and the legal (and practical) enforceability of break of journey restrictions is not very high.

Getting the tickets is pretty simple, you could opt for singles each way with Groupsave and Kids for a Quid and be done with it!

I presume you don’t have time to apply for Oyster Zip cards for the children? That would mean they travel for free if they are between 5 and 10...
Zip cards don’t offer free travel on National Rail services, so would require PAYG topups. It’s for a group of cub scouts and the logistics of sorting that out is just too hard and difficult.

It is if you request the origin from a station outside of Zones 1-6, such as Dartford.
So just to clarify, the adults can buy tickets from New Eltham to London, and the kids can have £1 tickets from Dartford or Stone Crossing? Or do the adult tickets have to match the child tickets?
The website suggests it is not valid inside zones 1-8, hence my assumption that Stone Crossing is the first valid station.
