From Epsom I can take either an SWR or Southern to Clapham Junction. Between Epsom and Clapham the trains do not pass through any locations in common. How many other examples of this where trains start at a common location, take different routes and then pass through a common location again later in their journey? Are there any examples with 3?

For the purposes of this query, the calling points need to be scheduled stops with at least one different intermediate location between them (so trains just running on the same piece of track don’t count)

Thought there would be quite a few examples up north. Perhaps it’s more interesting if we require the trains are run by different TOCs (as in the Epsom-Clapham example?)

Yes there must be loads of pairs, need to raise the bar to triplets. Here’s three different routes in the space of four minutes:
08.01 London Bridge to Dartford via Woolwich
08.02 London Bridge to Dartford via Sidcup
08.05 London Bridge to Dartford via Bexleyheath

As for two routes by different TOCs, Hackney Downs to Cheshunt, GA via Brimsdown, ARL via Southbury. Again should be lots more.

If we are going to stick with one TOC, Bristol-Paddington has services via Chippenham, Westbury and Bristol Parkway.

Thanks to the WMT timetable change there are now a lot of choices for the likes of Euston to Crewe! You can go direct via the WCML on Virgin or the semifast WMT. You can go on a really slow service via Stoke, Birmingham and Northampton, or 'just' via Birmingham and Northampton (ironically joining up with the service that goes via Stoke, at Birmingham).

Just a few that I can think of:
Newcastle to Glasgow Central via Edinburgh or via Dumfries
Thornaby to Newcastle via Hartlepool or via Darlington (works in the this direction only - no direct trains via Darlington in the opposite direction)
Thornaby to Northallerton via Yarm or via Darlington
York to Sheffield via Leeds, via Doncaster or via Pontefract Baghill
Leeds to Manchester Victoria via Bradford Interchange and Rochdale, or via Dewsbury and Rochdle, or via Dewsbury and Huddersfield
Huddersfield to Manchester Piccadilly via Manchester Victoria or via Guide Bridge
Sunderland to York via Newcastle or via Hartlepool
Haymarket to Perth via Kirkcaldy or via Stirling
Guildford to Clapham Junction via Woking, or via Cobham and Wimbledon, or via Epsom and Wimbledon, or via Epsom and West Croydon
Leeds to Sheffield via Wakefield Westgate or via Wakefield Kirkgate and Barnsley

Romsey to Southampton, where the service from Salisbury calls at Romsey, then continues via Totton, to Southampton, then back to Romsey via Chandlers Ford where it terminates

A few less obvious ones in the East Midlands based on one-ish-per-day services:

Nottingham to Peterborough via Loughborough and Melton Mowbray or via Grantham
Nottingham to Chesterfield via Derby or via Langley Mill
East Midlands Parkway (or Loughborough if we're reckoning on the stations "passed through") to Kettering via Corby or via Leicester

Clapham Junction to Southampton Central, or maybe Fareham (if St Denys is a consideration for the Southampton route). SWR direct, SN via the coast.

There must be hundreds...

Dartford has four (five via Parks Bridge Jn which is a " different location", six if you count the Tanners Hill spur at St Johns).

Another planet...
One that fits with the OP in being different TOCs on each route would be Huddersfield to Leeds. TPE via Dewsbury or Northern via Brighouse and Bradford Interchange. Only one intermediate station (Deighton) is on both routes, but isn't served by Brighouse trains.

There's also the third route via Wakefield Kirkgate and Normanton, but that doesn't have any regular scheduled direct services.

Somewhere between Waverley and Queen Street.
Glasgow Queen Street via either Falkirk High or Cumbernauld. Both 'meet' again at Polmont. The two services don't quite meet OP's 'third meeting' criteria, but the two lines cross each other at Castlecary and run virtually parallel for a spell at Bonnybridge where, oddly enough, there is a large orange lifeboat sitting next to the track.

I wager that there will be more of these if you factor in the various Edinburgh - Glasgow services across the four (+?) different routes available.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Glasgow Central - Carlisle via Kilmarnock or via Carstairs (via Kilmarnock is 99% of the time Scotrail; via Carstairs is Virgin West Coast and TPE)

Birmingham New Street - Leamington Spa via Coventry (mainly Manchester - Bournemouth) or Solihull (mainly Newcastle Central - Reading/Southampton)

In the latter days of British Rail and the early days of Virgin Cross Country, Birmingham and points south to the North West and Scotland via Preston. Between Stafford and Preston, some trains ran direct via Crewe and Warrington Bank Quay and others ran via Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester piccadilly, and Bolton.

Euston - Manchester Piccadilly go via Stoke or via Crewe. Do all of the ones via Stoke avoid Stafford or do some go via Stafford to add a third route?

Euston - Birmingham New Street via Northampton or via Weedon.

Euston - Glasgow/Edinburgh via the West Midlands or via the Trent Valley.

Birmingham New Street/Tamworth - Edinburgh/Glasgow via the East Coast Mainline or the West Coast Mainline.

There must be hundreds.

Are there any examples with 3?

I might have dredged up one example from personal experience.

Glasgow Central to Waverley. Scotrail service at 16:03 (etc) stops West Calder, Livingston South etc, and passes through Kirknewton. Finishes route with Haymarket - Waverley.

CrossCountry service from Glasgow Central at 21:05 (specifically) passes stops at Motherwell instead, and routes through Carstairs, but meets same route as above before Kirknewton. Follows same route until just prior to Haymarket, where it instead goes around the Edinburgh South suburban line, and comes up through Craigentinny and approaches Waverley from the East.

A fairly drastic example would be between St Pancras and North Kent (Gravesend to Rainham) as this can be done on Thameslink via London Bridge and Dartford, or on Southeastern via HS1

Swansea to Shrewsbury (or Craven Arms if you want them passing through no common stations). There are services via Cardiff and Hereford and services via Llandrindod Wells.
