Can't they still overtake at Warrington? The small loop on the North side just after Central going to Manchester?

There is nowhere on the CLC route where trains can overtake. Putting the Warrington West platforms (or Birchwood for that matter) on loops off the main line would have provided this facility but of course the cost would have blown the business case out of the water. So we are stuck with two fasts and two stoppers every hour (and some of the small stations at the Manchester end only get a train every two hours) and no paths for freight, charters etc.
As the plan is for most of the train to stop at WW, what's the point of loops here? Loops should be at somewhere only the slower trains stop.

There are loops at Glazebrook and it's possible to use the slow lines between South Parkway and Edge Hill. Both can happen when there is disruption but aren't really sufficient to restore the service, which illustrates the shortcomings of loops. There is no point in providing for freight, as the route has no freight terminals except Trafford Park, no WCML connection, doesn't access any of the various freight terminals at the Liverpool end and any freight would have to run via Oxford Road and Piccadilly P13/14.

To my mind the solution to this route is around putting in extra turnbacks and running the stoppers as short workings, possibly Liverpool-Birchwood and Manchester-WW so the Warrington stations have access to both. The Liverpool ones could become an extension of Merseyrail.

Local news has put up some pictures of the construction work :

Link

Work started earlier this year on the £19 million building work for the new facility at Chapelford.

It will serve passengers wanting to travel to Manchester, Liverpool and Warrington.

Station operators Northern are obligated to serve the station with one semi-fast train and two stopping trains per hour, linking west Warrington directly with Liverpool, Warrington town centre, Birchwood and Manchester.

Sankey station will also remain open, bosses say.

The station is due to be ready to open in summer 2019

Also for anyone interested the Warrington guardian put up a few more pictures recently:

https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/17400040.new-aerial-shots-reveal-warrington-west-station-development/

"NEW aerial footage reveals the developments on the Warrington West Station. Ahead of the proposed summer opening, council officials say the requirement for overnight works should now be less frequent. During the Christmas period there were big changes on site, following the installation of the lift shafts, footbridge and staircases. Scaffolding has now been built so that the cladding can be installed onto the lift shafts. Work will now continue on the platforms with completion of the retaining walls, cladding and installation of the various cabling and equipment required."

Looks like there is still a fair bit to do, but progress definitely being made :).

From reading this thread, it sounds as though reducing Sankey to peak hour only may lose a lot of non-car based passengers who may not return.

Knowing the area fairly well, there won't be that many non car users round there. It's not a deprived area by any means.

I don't think they quite meant that, more like, to use a comparison, moving Bletchley station to the Stadium site (as has occasionally been crayonista-ed in here) would mean a load of people who presently walk to the station from the predominantly residential area it currently occupies could no longer do so and so might desert the train in favour of driving to their final destination instead.

I don't support Warrington West in place of Sankey. It strikes me that it is a poorer location in terms of serving local population just so a new development can have a station. What the line needs is electrification and high-power EMUs like Class 350s, which would allow an extra station to be served with minimal time penalty - i.e. keep both, though I'd expect that you might give Warrington West a call on the EMT service as well for longer distance use.

Perhaps it will lose some passengers, as Warrington West looks like a 10 minute walk from Sankey for Penketh, which might swing the balance. However, Warrington West will still be in a residential area so it will just put a station within walking distance for a different group of people (admittedly maybe fewer people than before in total).

While I have never used the station, it does look like parking is very limited at Sankey and I think the provision of a large new car park (which there is no space for at Sankey) at Warrington West will probably attract lots more users in total.

I appreciate that the service cuts at Sankey might well be quite annoying for some existing users, but I think in the long term Warrington West along with the revised calling patterns will probably be a collective benefit.

I quite agree that ideally the line should be electrified though! Who can say when that will be on the cards though!

I know the area very well, and any potential loss at Sankey will be more than outweighed by the new station which has seen a massive influx of new, expensive housing and also is closer to Omega/Lingley Green developments.

I live slap bang between the two, Penketh is going to be the big loser really. For me, it would have made a lot more sense to use the old siding at Sankey (now houses) as an extended car park. Hopefully the provision of buses will improve; by way of comparison most of East Warrington can get to Birchwood using one bus but at present the 13 service is the only bus to serve the station and extends only half a mile or so up the road.

I see that 'Realtime Trains' now shows which services are intending to call, with times, which indicates that the plan is still for the station to open during the currency of the present timetable. Almost all the Northern semi-fasts are shown as calling, but only about half of the stoppers. No EMT trains are shown as calling.

Will the Manchester Wayfarer ticket be valid from Warrington West?

I know it is from Central and Bank Quay. I only ask as like Sankey, the new station is a 15 minute walk from home.

What is the current status of the proposed station and what is the hoped-for opening date?
The ticket office at Sankey closes on 31/08/19, presumably to tie in with Warrington West opening on 01/09/19.

The “Warrington West” signs are now in place on the platforms and I understand that the ticket office fit-out etc is nearing completion.

It's down as being valid to the Warrington Station Group at the moment, so it would make sense for it to be valid to West too when it opens..

On tonight's 21:45 from Oxford Road, the tannoy and information screens told us the train would be stoping at Warrington West. As I got off at Flixton I don't know how true that was.

RTT has Sankey going to limited service on Sunday 8th September so that must be when Warrington West is due to open

That was just that the traincrew hadn't removed WAW from the list in the TrainFX system. We got new codes at the timetable change last month and WAW is now in them, but has to be manually removed until it opens.
As it was the system went out of sync from Hough Green and wasn't reset until after leaving Hunts Cross.

Warrington Guardian saying it will now open on December 15th:

"THE delayed £20.5 million Warrington West railway station in Chapelford will open on December 15.

The development, which is nearing completion, had been scheduled to open in the summer but was hit by delays.

During last week’s supporting the local economy policy committee meeting, David Boyer, Warrington Borough Council’s operational director of transport and environment, confirmed the scheme is almost finished.

He also said Network Rail, the operator of the rail network, has been a ‘key partner’ but ‘at times they are not the easiest people to deal with’.

The council, Network Rail and Northern have issued a joint statement.

A spokesman on behalf of the three organisations said: “Although it has taken slightly longer than anticipated, we’re very excited that Warrington West station will open in December.

“As mentioned in August, there is some remaining work to complete before the station can open – this includes final snagging work, signal panel updates to include the new station on the signalling network, train driver training and completing the necessary safety checks.

“We’re working together to complete this and look forward to opening the doors to the public on December 15.”

As previously reported, the council ‘reluctantly agreed’ for services at Sankey for Penketh Station to be cut to four trains per day as part of the development of the new site in Chapelford.

Once it opens, the trains calling at Sankey for Penketh will be the 0745 to Liverpool Lime Street and 0820 to Manchester Oxford Road, the latter not getting to Oxford Road until 0903.

And the evening trains calling at the site will be the 1716 from Oxford Road and 1719 from Lime Street.

Labour’s Chapelford and Old Hall councillors Steve Parish, Rebecca Knowles and Paul Warburton have been monitoring the situation.

Cllr Parish said: “Timing that would allow an extra stop on earlier trains to Manchester looks difficult but (probably too late for December) we’re asking if one of the earlier trains from Liverpool to Warrington might call at Sankey to connect at Central with semi-fast services to Manchester.”

The council says it continues to be in dialogue with Northern regarding future services at Sankey for Penketh.

A spokesman added: “We are committed to improving services at all stations in the borough and will continue to work in partnership with train operating companies and other rail industry partners in order to achieve this.

“The timetabled peak hour services from Sankey for Penketh Station are in line with the train service requirements set out in the Northern franchise.

“Timetables are determined by the rail industry and we will work with partners in the industry to review the timing of services from Sankey for future timetable changes.”

Driver training?
There will be a brief posted in the signing on points at Lime Street and Piccadilly depots, notification in WON section C and that will be it.

New station opens in a blaze of glory!

Then numerous trains are cancelled because of a lack of drivers.

imagine Tesco opening a new store at 9am, then closing it at 11am for a couple of hours because of a shortage of cashiers...!

It seems a bit odd that you can’t access it directly from the Sycamore Lane side. After having to wade through a puddle to get to the ticket machine at Sankey on Friday, it’s a big improvement.

Unfortunately the two trains an hour towards Manchester off-peak are very close together, with the stopper first so the express catches up, so effectively it's only an hourly service.
