Hi, I would like to travel from Cambridge to Ealing Broadway and back on a weekday. If I get the off peak day return (CDR - £19.95 with 16-25 railcard), can I use the Central Line or the District Line all the way to Ealing Broadway? Or must I use TfL Rail or GWR from Paddington?

Thanks!

Cross-London transfers on the Underground may be made to or from Ealing Broadway - see National Rail Enquiries' list of valid starting and finishing stations.

Yes, you may travel on LU Central and District lines (or indeed, the Piccadilly line between King's Cross St Pancras and Ealing Common, then District line) to Ealing Broadway.

A tip would be to change at Acton Town, the station before Ealing Common. That way you can take any Picadilly Line train.

It may be worth checking whether splitting is cheaper. National Rail to Kings Cross and Oyster/contactless from there to Ealing Broadway.

Technically the cross-London transfer shouldn't end the journey so you'd need a ticket to Zone U123 at a slightly higher price. In practice it's unlikely to be a problem. Using payg from Liverpool Street might be better anyway as you've then got the option of cheaper GA-only tickets for the first leg.

Rather than buying a ticket to U123, it's cheaper to buy a CDR from Cambridge to West Drayton, which is the same price as Ealing Broadway.

Technically the "transfer" can end the journey, where the validity outside Zone 1 is by virtual of acceptance at these stations. The actual transfer element is only within Zone 1.

There was previously an example in The Manual illustrating this using a journey from Upminster, where LUL services can be used to start a journey originated there and involving a cross-London transfer.

Looks like I can just get the West Drayton ticket and avoid any potential issues. Thank you for everyone’s help.

I should point out that a Cambridge - London Zones 1-6 travelcard routed Greater Anglia only is £16.65 (16-25 railcard), with the caveat that you can only use Greater Anglia trains from Cambridge - Tottenham Hale / London Liverpool Street. Also this ticket has no evening peak restrictions back from London, while your £19.95 ticket seems to have them!
