Air pots? Are those the ones with the button on the top which pushes out the drink?

I think the Ryanair things are Lavazza.

Yes. Pump action with a small lever at the top. Wetherspoons used similar types before installing the machines they now have for all hot drinks.

Filter coffee - now there's a good plan. Has any other UK TOC done that before?
GWR used individual filters (Rombouts I think) in their buffets, then they switched to some terrible instant for a while.

The Dutch like their coffee- I wonder if they're doing something similar to the Ryanair brewed coffee? They have a clever cup/lid thing where you just pour hot water into it, but then there is real ground coffee in it and a filter in the lid. Best coffee I've ever had on a plane, and clearly easy to do with trolleys!

I remember seeing these on SNCF Intercités circa 2007 and was quite impressed. It's good coffee but they're a nightmare for the volume of plastic waste they produce - they are fiddly to recycle and you can be pretty sure most companies who sell them don't bother.

Cups are mostly as bad, to be fair (due to the plastic lining), though reusable cups would not be viable for at-seat service (nowhere to properly wash them out) so you'd really need to wait for recyclable materials there.

I think filter is the right way to go here, well done GA. Simple, high quality and effective. And there's clearly demand for it - Starbucks have done it for years (indeed they started off in business in the US doing filter only - espresso came later) and Costa have recently added it to their range too. Also very quick to serve unlike doing several cups from a fancy machine.

Starbucks and Costa are only in on it as the much higher quality independents were doing well off it.

Lavazza is utter garbage.

It's not really interchangeable with espresso based drinks, they are very different.

Starbucks has done filter coffee since day one (similar to Tim Hortons). They added espresso later.

It's better than instant.

It depends what espresso based drinks you mean. Americano and filter are very similar (you can tell the difference, a bit like you can with filter vs cafetiere, but they are in the same segment of the market i.e. "not very milky coffee"). And there's what I think Starbucks were calling "caffe misto" which is filter with steamed milk which is "sort of" a latte, though I doubt they'll do that.

Generally I think I prefer espresso-based drinks, though if the quality of coffee is good enough filter can be just as good sometimes.
