My train home (22.55 Todmorden - Littleborough) was cancelled on 9th July. It was showing "delayed due to trespassers on the line" when I got to the station. At 23.10 the screens were still giving the same message and I asked the one remaining passenger where he was going. He said Littleborough so we got a taxi, which cost us £5 each. I had a return ticket and there was a later train at 23.34.

I claimed "delay repay", explaining the situation and saying that I didn't have a receipt for the taxi. Northern has just replied offering me 70p! Is this fair, or should I pursue it further (e.g. via Passenger Focus)?

I submitted four delay repay forms for myself and family - We were delayed from Manchester Victoria to Chester due to trespass on the line. The silly thing is three of our party received Ten pounds five pence each, Whilst I got nothing, we all had the same ticket. Northern said I had sent in a duplicate form, Three of us are named Alan and two Alans are at the same address. Surely I am entitled too?.

If the question is "is it fair", that's subjective. Northern think it's fair. You don't. I agree with you and I disagree with Northern.

If the question is "is it reasonable / correct?" then that's a different question but we do not have the necessary information to answer it, such as how much your ticket cost, if it was a single or return, if you used any part of the ticket. Also, was there a help point, if so did you use it? If so, did they answer, and what conversation took place.

Off-peak return ticket, with senior railcard, costs £2.80. I used the outward part earlier. The single fare is £2.70! I didn't use a help point, in fact I don't remember seeing one at Todmorden and I've used the station many times. Unstaffed Walsden has one.

The next train you could've caught was the 23:34 from Todmorden arriving Littleborough at 23:43. This train ran on time so had you caught this train your overall delay would have been 39 minutes. This would qualify for a free single ticket or a 50% cost of the single journey fare under Northern's Delay Repay scheme. If you had an Off Peak Day Return costing £2.82 then the compensation due would be 35p.

If you decided to travel by taxi, without reference to Northern then I don't believe they are liable to pay the taxi fare, especially when the overall delay to your journey was only 39 minutes.

Due compensation would be 70p not 35p.
