Hi,

I meant to post this a while ago, but whilst travelling on Merseyrail, I noticed an emergency entrance/exit to the cab accessed by smashing a glass panel in the cab door and pulling the handle down.

I wondered if the reason of this panels existence is because of the tunnel working? though I don’t recall seeing anything similar on 319s or 700s. I’m sure I have seen something similar on the Glasgow subway though.

Any ideas?

Saperstein.

I'm not 100% familiar with the 50x's, but my first thought is that a fair few trains of that age have a local door within the cab area, which might be needed if the ⅓- and ⅔-length saloon doors become blocked in an emergency.

its all to do with the risk assessed by the types/size of tunnels. These are the same as was fitted to 313's (not sure if they are still on GN, but the SN ones were removed after it was deemed no longer required). I think you would be better comparing these to 717s rather than 700/319s as the tunnel diameters on TL are big enough to allow for egress through a side door, where as on the NCL there is not the space, but not knowing the Merseyrail network I couldn't comment on their current requirements in the 507/8s

I think it's because of the tunnels, ScotRail's 314s have exactly the same thing on the cab doors presumably because as new they worked the Argyle line which is in tunnel from just after Exhibition Centre to Dalmarnock.
