I'm probably equally as excited about the 802's as Mk5A + 68's!

Speaking of which, I'm considering a trip up to Newcastle which wasn't amazing last time on the 185's...

Needed the loo, of which only one was operational, put soap on my hands then realised there was no running water

What's the consensus in regards to when these units are likely to come into operation? Would the end of the year be realistic?

Are these expected on Airport or Liverpool diagrams first?

Until the December timetable change Airport-Newcastle services must be run by 185s. This service and Airport-Middlesbrough are timetabled to share platforms with other services. Five coach sets require sole use of Airport station platforms because the platforms are 200m long with signals in the middle. It has been inevitable since the May timetable changes were announced that there would be no more than 7 TPE 802s ( and 7 Mark V sets) rostered on each day until the end of the year. That seemed outrageous at the start of the year but its looking like TPE will not reach the limit. TPE Scotland services do not have this problem.

Good logic, thanks for that

A class 802 was at Liverpool Lime Street last night at around 19:55, not too sure which one but it was in a all grey livery.

Any closer to one coming into service? I understand the training schedule is a bit haphazard at the moment.

205 was at Edge Hill yesterday morning, having swapped over with 202, so possibly that one.

Reading this thread with interest as a frequent traveler to Newcastle with work. I 99% of the time travel 1st Class (work are paying!) so haven't really experienced any of the severe overcrowding on the 185's and always got a seat although at times it has been standing room only in 1st Class.

Out of interest do we have any seating plans?

Yes, seven more seats in first class on these + 2 wheelchair spaces compared to a 185. Time will tell if this is enough for a train travelling all the way from Liverpool to Edinburgh via York...

Please can anyone assist with the ID of the unit running yesterday (Weds 18th) Heaton to Lime St? Headcode was 5Q54 - passed it awaiting its path at Heaton Lodge Jct about 2030.

Thank you

A TPE 802 was at Edinburgh this morning. Are they planning to extend services north of Newcastle?

There's plans to extend the current Lime Street to Newcastle services to Edinburgh IIRC.

One of the main limiting factors of it not being in the timetable yet is finding time to train drivers not only on the new stock, but on the new route - there was some overnight paths earlier this year, but I'm unsure if they were to become competent on the stock as well as the route.

I believe as well there were power issues North of Newcastle which would have made it difficult to run North of Newcastle on electric too.

My turn to route learn newcastle-edinburgh next week. Out of the cons Think we are about half way through depot compliment of 15 with route learning so far, with two passed out on 802s. Drivers are a bit ahead of us as far as 802 training is concerned and October has been mentioned for an introduction in to service with Edinburgh from December.

Be interesting to hear whether you will be any diesel only or limited electric power use over any sections of the route.

One of the morning trains has chathill as a station stop from what I understand. NR don't like changeovers from diesel to electric on the move on the ropey ECML knitting, so stopping at chathill to changeover and combining a station stop in the process makes for a safer changeover otherwise it's diesel all the way. I have also been told that electric all the way has been authorised but wether this is all trains or certain runs only I don't know. Given the power limitations in the Berwick area and with LNER now running electric azumas Im a little cynical. I will find out more once I start route learning next week and see if I can find some reliable answers.

There’s no TPE passenger call at Chathill showing in RTT at the moment, the only off-pattern early and late calls I found were a handful of Berwicks and Alnmouths.

As I haven't been told anything official I did say in my post I was cynical and I will try and find some reliable answers next week, not that I'm doubting my driver training colleagues but there has been so much changed plans and contradictory information passed around the messroom it's difficult to tell what's fact and merely interpretation of the facts ;)

Just because it doesn't show on RTT doesn't mean the train won't have to pause at Chathill for operational reasons. They wouldn't want to book a stop there as that might attract one or two passengers and be difficult to stop stopping at a later date

Guessing the 802's will also switch to electric at Victoria for the central Manchester section?

Would make sense and help in reducing pollution/noise in the city centre.

The only train to call at Chathill is the morning and evening commuter train to/from Newcastle. This train runs empty to Berwick to turnround for the journey back to Newcastle. There is no need for any other train to call to pan up or down or anything.

This would also imply they would leave York on diesel rather than run to Colton Junction on electric.

I thought that the restriction was only on raising the pan at speed. It can be dropped anywhere without problems (apart from loss of power if the diesels aren't running).
