There where a couple of Glasgows that where accelerated up road missing out Wigan/Warrinton thus arriving Euston xx01 rather than xx11. I sort of hoped that was the ultimate goal to speed up others during the day but never happened.
The 1040 from Glasgow was slowed down even more by the addition of a call at Rugby.

It's odd isn't it. Talk of more calls at Motherwell too. Ten years ago it was all about faster Glasgow timings to compete with airlines.

I assume it's a case by case thing depending on loading on each train. Tactical Rugby, Motherwell etc calls do enable more direct access to the service from otherwise bypassed markets (e.g. Rugby picks up some peoplw who may otherwise fly from Birmingham)

The train goes back to Oxley, so if it went further north it'd have further to come back. No need if there is a connecting train.
Previously the Voyagers ended at Crewe as it was easier to get them back to Central Rivers.
And anyone who suggests that the railway nowadays runs for its own convenience rather than to serve passenger needs gets shouted down pdq!

I seem to remember in the days of Virgin running Cross Country a 17:25 Plymouth to Preston, which was probably 21:03 from Birmingham New Street, arriving Preston about 23:00. Of course it would have been a 220/221 so would have gone back to Crewe CS or Central Rivers. Or maybe Longsight?

Such arrangements are precisely to maximise the available fleet for useful daytime passenger services, not just pointless late evening service dupication of half empty trains.

Is there a huge untapped market for Birmingham to Wigan, Warrington and Preston at 9pm that isn't met by an easy change of train at Stafford?

And is this market bigger than the morning commuter market, which needs trains tucked up in bed at midnight not 3am?

To provide a connection for Northampton (pop; 200,000).
Looking at the populations quoted above, actually a bigger potential market than most of the all day calling points!
