Steam: 47xx Night Owls, a Saint had a baby with a 28xx and produced a super loco.
Diesel: HSTs, do I even need to expand?
EMU: 365, just for its slightly psychotic grin.
DMU: 158, fianl perfection of the Sprinter.
BMU: 755, love those but I am biased.

For me with older units it will be class 205, 207, 304, 305, 308, 415, 504. Also find class 421 and 423 quite attractive in their way. For newer stuff 465/0, 465/1 and 365 all with their original fronts and in NSE livery were quite attractive IMO, and 323s aren’t bad either. Also class 180.

As regards locos has to be classes 37, 40 and 55, perhaps class 31 too.

With regards to LU stock I think the S stock trains are pretty good looking. I also like the 1972 stock, although nostalgia plays a big role in that. I'm too young to have any attachment to anything older.

Steam: LMS Coronation with the A4 Pacific coming in a close second!
Diesel: Class 68 (as for BR days I'd say Class 40)
DMU: Class 185, no question
EMU: I'm caught between Class 802, Class 397, Class 390 and Class 745 on this one o_O

Steam: Mallard
Diesel: Class 43 (High Speed Train Power Car)
Electric: Class 87
DMU: Class 101 (for in service it would have to be 150/1)
EMU: Class 304 (for in service - well nearly! - the Class 397 blitzes anything out there right now and that includes the fantastic looking 333s

Steam - GWR king in early BR express blue
Diesel - A draw between the Ivatt twins in original black and silver livery and the prototype Deltic
Electric - 81 in electric blue livery with no warning panel
DMU - 124 in BR green
EMU (3rd rail) - 442 in NSE
EMU (OHLE) - 303 in Strathclyde PTE orange
EMU (dual voltage) - 325, although they wouldn't look half as good if they had windows and didn't wear Royal Mail red.

Another planet...
Has to be the prototype Deltic. Simply gorgeous.
To me it looks like what would've happened if English Electric had managed to sell their Deltic design to US railroads... which would certainly have made it one of the least-ugly locomotives on THAT side of the pond! But I prefer the production units.

Without a doubt, the most beautiful train is the one that finally arrives when you are cold and tired, after a difficult day, to take you home. Steam/diesel/electric/powered by fairy dust, it doesn't matter.

A pacer could fit that description, which I'd struggle to compliment. You have a good point though, perhaps the beauty of a train is in more than just how it looks?

Steam: all ugly scrapheaps
Diesel: HST
Electric: IC225
DMU: 170
EMU: 323
Overall: IC225

Admittedly the multiple units are grasping at straws somewhat.

I know people have different tastes, but there is no way you can look at an A4 or a streamlined LMS Coronation class and describe it as "an ugly scrapheap"!!

The 390 in original Virgin Trains livery with the stripy doors... cor, it just blows every other train ever built right out of the park.

As you specify "what we currently have", including preserved items, I might include:
DMU: Class 195 (closely followed by 180, 175, 185, 168/170/172)
EMU: Class 397
Diesel Loco: Class 55
Electric Loco: Class 90
Steam: Hard to choose between A4 & "Duchess" 4-6-2s
(Though tomorrow, I might have different thoughts on some of them.)

Historic
DMU: Trans Pennine Class 124
EMU: ex-LMS Classes 502 /503.
Diesel Loco: LMS 10000/10001
Electric Loco: Class 71
