Hi guys/gals,

I tend to keep an eye on the EMR website and noticed that a bunch of internal job postings have come up today, including for trainee drivers: https://jobs.eastmidlandsrailway.co.uk/vacancy.aspx?ref=2019-325.

Do TOCs tend to put things out internally first and then externally if they don’t get the numbers, or is there no real pattern to it?
Although the 'headline' says trainee driver it says further down a licence and driver competence is required!

Also says ‘ Please be aware this job vacancy is only available to EMR staff that have been made aware that they are at risk“

Anybody know what this Risk is?

I didn’t even see that. There are about 40 odd internal job vacancies that have appeared today.

Maybe it is restructuring now that Abellio have got their feet under the table.

EMR only ever recruit for mainline drivers internally (except for those based at St Pancras) so you will never see this advertised externally.

Ahhhhh, thanks @Dogbox!

For Derby and Nottingham though their general MO is to recruit from the depot drivers, who are all European train driver licence holders.

Not quite true. Neville Hill drivers can apply for these, most of which do not hold the European licence.

That’s right! EMR recruit internally for Nottingham and Derby drivers from their currently serving Depot/Service Drivers.

In this case, all current internal ads were added yesterday as alternative roles for EMR staff who have been informed their current roles are at risk.
Because of this, I doubt they will be advertised externally.

Ive never known a TOC to advertise internally for roles on their public website. Usually they have internal vacancy lists only accessible to staff?

EMR/EMT have always done it this way. LNER also.

MTR did this earlier in the year and then the following week it was made external too.

Add TfW to the list of those that do

As with almost everything on the railway, the answer is "it varies". Some TOCs are more likely to recruit internally then others. There have been a few threads on here about the subject of whether being internal cab help or hinder your career (especially with regards to trainee driver jobs). At EMR, trainee mainline driver jobs for external candidates are few and far between (since most of their recruitment is filled through qualified external candidates or internals moving up from depot driving).

Are you someone who wants a trainee drivers job and is trying to decide if they'd have a better chance taking another job within the company first?

I was recently unsuccessful for the Kettering Trainee Mainline Driver role.

I am currently most of the way through the recruitment process for the Train Manager role.

I really don’t know what my prospects of being a driver with EMR are, but I would enjoy the Train Manager role in any case.

Within EMR you would have to transfer from train manager to depot driver before you could go mainline driving.
