From the GWR buffet thread...

That said, the item of train catering I miss the most is the old XC sausage, bacon, egg and tomato roll (which over time progressed through various types of bread).

What is the no-longer-available item of train food or drink you miss most?

Don’t miss it but does anyone remember the Red Cans of McEwans export always the last resort option on a NSE or IC Buffet Car

The sausage baguette as prepared by the FGW (as it was) "Travelling Chef" - it was delicious!

In the mid nineties I used to do Reading to Manchester on the Brighton to Edinburgh XC service (I think there was one that started at Poole too but not sure on the destination) and the burger was quite nice - although by today’s standards probably not considered good! I was an 18 year old student then and probably didn’t know any better

I believe it was a class 47 hauling mark 2 coaches (correct me if I’m wrong, I know you will) that I think had tread breaks and if you were unlucky enough to sit above the bogies you got quite a bouncy, smelly & noisy ride under breaking. Ah the good old days..... <sarcasm>

The wine list on the BR-era WCML intercity sets
But all the food on the Scottish-crewed sets was good - broiled venison was exceptional and reasonably priced

As a child I used to delight in having a hot chocolate from the trolley on ScotRail 170s on the E&G. I think it was Aero(?), it's now something else entirely and quite poor to my mind.

Yes that's all exactly as I recall too, also ICXC offered boxes of fries to go with the cheeseburger and I recall they did a decent sized Herta Hot Dog offered with mustard and ketchup too, does anyone remember that?

Cheeseburgers and chocolate chip cookies from the last few years of BR Intercity services. I couldn’t get enough of them!

If we’re going international, the short lived Deutsche Bahn Frühstück Burger. So much better than the current ‘Kit form’ mix and match breakfast menu.

Did all XC services have a buffet car?

LOL a distant dream today, compare that with a sweaty cheese sandwich and a WARM, YES, WARM bottle of Doombar from the XC trolley. Yuk!

Thats what puts me off buying drinks off trollies , if your lucky the XC HSTS often operate a buffet.

If you’re lucky your beer will be ambient temperature, last time I had one it was actually warm. I didn’t know this until the top had been removed by the trolly person and it was too late to return... take own drinks now!

Certainly by the era the OP quotes all the mk2 loco hauled sets (47/86 hauled) had a Mk2 RFB as part of the 7 coach formation, the XC HST sets had catering facilities too. The 158s obviously only had a trolley service.
Micro chips?In black box?

All I can remember is they were produced by Mccains and they were rather unappetising unlike the cheeseburgers and frankfurters.

They still haven't changed!

Really surprised they still sell them, obviously weren't a success on BR as they didn't offer them for long and if anything 20 odd years on people seem to have slightly higher expectations?

Yeah, still available in pretty much every supermarket. Used to be called Micro Chips, now Quick Chips.
