I’m looking at booking a return to London next Saturday but as seat selector has gone and I want a plug socket seat, is there a way to check the type of train or at least choose my seat on a pendolino to make sure it is at my preferred seat?

Book using trainsplit.com. They have got a seat selector.

Real Time Trains in Advanced Mode will often have the scheduled type, although it's not 100% guaranteed.

I’ve tried trainsplit and got to payment but no seat selector has been available, I don’t want to buy tickets before reservation.

On the page where you review your booking select the choose my seat option next to where it says seat reservations.

Is that after card details are entered?
It is before you enter any card or contact information, it is on the same page (above) where you select whether you want to have an E ticket or collect from the station.

If you're able to reserve a seat and it shows which seat you've reserved, do a pretend booking for First Class.

If it reserves you a seat in E or L it's a Super Voyager (or two).
If it reserves you in H/J/K it's a Pendolino.
