Good morning
Apologies if this is not the right place, or this has been discussed before... I just have a question:

Which came first? 43063 Virgin HST being named "Maiden Voyager", or 220001 Virgin Voyager being named "Maiden Voyager"?

Was it on the 43 and then put on the new 220 as the first Voyager?
What happened to whichever one was denamed, did/do they run nameless now?
Were they both called Maiden Voyager? Is it possible to have two locos/units on UK rail with the same name, I thought not?

Thank you for any sleuthing... I don't want the simple error of having two models with the same name when it never happened / is not possible.

Many thanks in advance
Charlotte

As they were both acknowledging new starts in the same vein that Bransons first 747 was also called maiden voyager they both received the name.

43063 received it first at the start of the VXC franchise in 1997, 220001 received it on introduction in 2001

I'm sure I read somewhere that you can have 2 locos/units with the same name, I'm sure there was a thread about it, as it's the TOPS number that's the more important thing.

Not sure if they were both named at the same time. I don’t recall seeing them in service named, but then I joined VXC the same day the 47s ran their last services, so by that point Voyagers were starting to replace HSTs

In theory, any item of rolling stock can carry any name at any time. As names are really only there for publicity, the company would most likely choose not to duplicate some other company's name (or a name elsewhere in their own fleet) but there is no law against it.

There have been duplicates in the past, and indeed in the same TOC’s fleet. I have a recollection from the dim and distant past of both 87007 and 390014 carrying “City of Manchester” plates at the same time, for example.

Thank you to all responses, that's really helpful.

So whilst we're not 100% that the 43 and 220 wore Maiden Voyager at the same time, it would be perfectly legit to do so, and has been done with others else where.

That's fab, thank you all!

To add to what has been said above, 43063 had it's "Maiden Voyager" nameplates removed in October 1999, over a year before 220001 was similarly named.

Aha, thank you sprinterguy - so not possible that both were seen at the same time in this instance, but not prohibited/impossible generally. That informs the plan,
Obliged.
