Just been offered an apprenticeship as a signaller at the Dundee Depot. Absolutely buzzing. Can anyone tell me what grade Dundee is and what the shift patterns are up here now?

I have been given an interview date of 3rd September. Good luck!

24th September for me for the future opportunities. It's a bit more time to prepare, so I'm taking a couple of days to get my head around things before I dive into practice tests and the like.

Good luck everyone, hopefully we all get the answer we're looking for.

I'm sorry to hear that Katey89. Don't let it dishearten you, keep trying and fingers crossed for next time!
I'm sure I have seen on this page a few members not being successful the first few goes. At least you have the experience of the application now.

Thank you Boobah086! Means a lot will keep trying and get there one day :)

I've just had my medical booked, which is in three weeks time, but on the email from recruitment they said I may be contacted to discuss availability for a start date only after they get my acceptance form (and do the background checks which I have now completed/sent to them), so does that mean that I may get told my start date before I've completed the medical, and I'm assuming that the start date itself has to be after I've completed the medical?
I wouldn't worry too much about the medical delaying a start date, my original one was cancelled due to covid and the medical I eventually had was while I was on week 6 of signalling school.
Best of luck.

Give the mock tests a good go to get a feel for what you are expecting is my best advice !

Hi friends,

Had my first interview yesterday by telephone conference call. Slightly strange, but generally a good experience, despite me having to take the call in the car at the top of the drive - the signal at home is rubbish and I didn't want to risk dropping out all the time.. It was like being in a sauna!

Ive another, face to face, interview booked in a couple of weeks time for the vacancy at Liskeard. Can anyone give me any info on the Liskeard box please? I know its on a 12 hour roster but other than that, not much..

Thanks all

@Shep19 I had an interview for Dullingham last week, I presume none of the interviewees hit the spot if you've been sent an email yesterday.

Bit gutted but oh well! Glad you've been given a chance!

Best of luck mate!

I've just looked on the Network Rail website and a signaller job is advertised at Doncaster. However it's a grade 9 level. I know it's very unlikely I'd get anywhere with it at that level but nothing to lose trying.
Has anyone ever got straight into a level 9 role with no experience?

A little update. A few weeks after putting the application in and it saying "application accepted" it changed to Invite for test last night and the links have just been sent over for the numeric/verbal/instrument tests.
I've got 5 days to complete them so will spend a bit of time swatting up and give it a good go on Sunday.

Question folks if I may, does anyone know which boxes the Kingussie relief covers? I'm assuming Kingussie, Dalwhinnie and Blair Atholl, but if the railway has taught me anything it's never to assume!
It goes to Dalwhinnie pretty sure it does. Or are you meaning the bells with the signallers?

Ah, I got my rejection email for the Future Opportunities ad. They have really upped their game though, it says I'm a "silver medallist" and they'll keep my details on file, which is an endearing way to put it! :E

Check your email again. They sent out a bunch of these. I had one even though I have been given and interview date. The silver email was swiftly followed by another recalling the first and then a 3rd apologising that the 1st had been sent in error and reconfirming my interview, so definitely check your email again as you may have another !!

Ahhhh really?! Thanks for the heads-up and congratulations on getting an interview! I have no other emails though. I only got my email this afternoon so I assume they sent the wrong ones to the successful people first and then the correct ones to the rest of us today.

Yes I had it this afternoon also. Someone in HR has had a bit of a meltdown I think. Hopefully you'll get another. Fingers crossed for you!

No, I mean which boxes the Relief Signaller based at Kingussie covers - but I've already received the answer from another source, the relief only covers Kingussie and Dalwhinnie boxes.

There are a few signallers in Aviemore that work in Kingussie box, then one that lives in Dalwhinnie also works at Kingussie.

There seems to quite a influx of ladies in the recruitment process at the moment, can i ask what attracted you to the job?

Also what are your expectations once your in the box?

Seems a rather bizarre question if you don’t mind me saying so. Surely the answer is the same for a bloke who applied? Traditionally a job done by men, yes, but as to ask what attracted you to the job is surely an individual thing regardless of sex? Likely answers, Salary, Benefits, time off, job security etc.. Or am I missing something with the question? Yes there is great opportunities available for female applicants possibly with improved chances at the sift, surely after that the recruitment process will select the best candidate for the job regardless..

You have just grabbed hold of the pointy end of my stick, ie the wrong end.

As a father of two daughters both rapidly approaching the age they’ll be entering the employment market I’m interested to know what attracts women into what is a role dominated by men, and also what do they expect.

It wasn’t a loaded question.

My own location now has 11 lady signallers either in the links or in training, I’m also keen to push my daughters into the industry - although I wouldn’t want them in the multi manned signalling location, I’d prefer a “modern” environment.

I was attracted to the job because it appeared a good fit for my skill set and personality type, I wanted job security, a decent wage and it suits my lifestyle. From my own experience I prefer working in a male dominated environment, however it wasn't really a factor in me wanting to apply.

Expectations in terms of?

Thank you, I expected the obvious things like security, salary and terms. My wife is the same she’s always worked in male dominated environments, probably helps she was the only girl in her family so takes no prisoners!

Expectations in terms of when things go pear shaped the air turns blue. The old C bomb is often thrown about, along with the lots of Fs for good measure.

Would you expect the language to be moderated or cut out?
It’s “funny” that most of our female colleagues arrive off the street with a story. So in so said this or that etc.
Basically total rubbish made up and passed off as fact.

What new people - male and female are sold in the ads is often very different to the actual environment you’ll work in.

Im very quiet, I keep myself to myself when I arrived I had a story arrive a few weeks before me as well. Luckily when I do get to know people they realise I am actually alirght, and that I literally just keep myself fo myself and do my job.
