Presumably you mean fast? Surely it cannot be an ORCATS raid if it’s run at the requirement of the DfTs franchise spec?
Sorry that I did mean fast. Have corrected. Maybe the DfT wanted them to have some more money as they felt it would help them financially. Clutching at straws here, can the DfT organise an ORCATS raid for a future franchise?

Well yes, if you want to view it as some sort of raid, but then it’s little different to DfT deciding Southern should start operating a Brighton - Southampton service that would effectively replace an existing SWT Brighton - Basingstoke service.

Well indeed it is little different.

The weekday PM service and all Sunday services except the morning one from Primary should return from the December timetable change however engineering work will prevent the Brighton service running over the first two weeks and more work is planned in January in the fareham area

Interesting, do you know why the direct Sunday morning service isn’t returning? That’s the one I used most!

The morning service only runs to provide stock for the return working.

As it runs in the peak, the working runs in passenger service and calls at some smaller stations to pick up the school flow.

That's the weekday one though?

Yes that's the weekday one. No idea why the Sunday morning service doesn't run in full to Brighton.
If note is the weekday afternoon Great Malvern to Brighton will be booked a 158. Presumably the late night Bristol Parkway to Portsmouth and Southsea that was introduced last year will be reintroduced as it uses the same unit which certainly used to work the morning Brighton as well

Hopefully they’ll decide to bring it back eventually. Very useful for returning after a long weekend or a week away. It also means you don’t have to unload your luggage as the train is direct and there is no need to change trains! My friends from Cardiff have used it a few times too - and there are usually cheap advances.

Where is “Primary” a typo for?

Always thought that Romsey-Brighton is a rather bizarre part of the GWR franchise (or whatever) specification - I could understand starting a service from Southampton, but Romsey? As the set usually came ECS from Fratton it seemed weird going that far for little marginal business.

I think the ECS normally provides route retention for Eastleigh to Romsey via Chandlers Ford, but it isn‘t on RTT yet?

Correct
Could GWR reduce their Sunday brightons to a weekday frequency (2) or are they contracted to provide 4

Yes I know, but the first inbound GWR service to Brighton is supposed to run from Romsey anyway...

I know that you knew about Pompey but thought it would be good to explain to others not familiar with the area. Romsey is the likely answer as others have mentioned. Romsey is for driver route retention via Chandlers Ford.

The reason that service is specified to start back from Romsey is predating the SWR/SWT Romsey circular services to provide an early arrive into Southampton from Romsey. The route retention is a happy by product.

Just looking through old bashing books, nice entry from May 85 during Brighton station closure , 1047 Haywards Heath to Penzance FO, was booked 33 through to Exeter for a Class 50 onwards

First train on a Sunday from Portsmouth to Bristol will be around 11 am on a Sunday from December timetable which explains no morning Brighton
