Old Circle line tube carriages

I'm looking for an old circle and/or Northern line tube carriage to do some filming in. Ones dating from c.2000 ideally. I think TFL might have some but the costs are extortionate! Also any options for tube tunnel/station looking locations a bonus, but appreciate that's an even harder ask...

Epping and Ongar railway ?

They have some Northern Line 1959 stock - last ones were withdrawn in ~2000.

I wonder if the Alderney railway ever consider building a tunnel for filming work? They have a Northern line carriage retired around 2000.

I believe the only C stock extant is with TfL, certainly according to the Vintage Carriages Trust register - www.cs.rhrp.org.uk/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=15957

5701 survives on display at Greenwich University
Thank you, this is a really great shout . Could actually work. I'm hoping to get close up shots more than action filming, should have specified really. Close enough that the fact it's next to a playground/classrooms may not be an issue!

With regards a fairly modern ish station for filming ask TFL about charing cross.

There's a whole other section of the tube station down there that they use for testing out new bits for stations etc.

Always thought it was odd that the 7/7 replacement carriages weren't retained by TfL or at least sold for preservation or given to the London Transport Museum rather than scrapped. Those carriages were only a few years old when withdrawn.

Got featured about filming there on this eve's Secrets of the London Underground - with the underground's filming coordinator - Tim Dunn asked how much it costs to use - reply was 'aroud £3k to £4k an hour' ...

Possibly a 1938 stock could be a stand-in? They were withdrawn from the Northern line in the 70s, but the London Transport Museum has preserved both static and operational ones.

1972 Mk1 stock were also on the Northern Line, withdrawn in the 90s. A 1967 unrefurbished stock could be a stand-in for the 1972 stock. See the very bottom of this page:

The 1967 stock above only seems to have longitudinal seats based on this video:

Caroline Polachek's "Desire" album cover from 2023 has transverse seats. I guess it was taken on LU's operational 1972 Mk1 stock?

Wow that's actually even more than I thought. That's so much!!
I think if anyone had old train stock and knew what what they were doing with publicity and affordability, they could make a killing with filming and photography crews.
Depending on what exactly you are after, there is (or at least was) part of a C Stock car in a building lobby in Aldgate.
If it's still there, it may be worth seeing whether the building owner would allow filming in it for a suitable fee which might be less than LT would ask for.
Thanks for this! Very helpful and definitely worth an investigate...

More for interest I guess but Met Police have an old Central line carriage in a mock Underground station called Denton. This is at the Public Order training centre at Gravesend. Also at the same site but on the firearms training side is a similar set up but with what I think is a class 311 or 303 BR emu carriage although I'm not roughty toughty enough to have seen that in person on that part of the site!

It's good to see that the OP is trying to get things accurate: this is not something that media is exactly renowned for (see, for example, Superman IV and Skyfall. Also numerous films and tv shows featuring the surface railway). But if accuracy isn't the be-all and end-all talking to South West Trains for the Island Line on the isle of Wight might be a way forward: the trains are old District Line stock and retain an 'Underground' like interior even though they are now in a different livery and the isle of Wight is distinctly lacking in tube tunnels.

it has gone and wasn't a C Stock per say, just using some recovered parts in a mock-up shell.

I would imagine the costs of building a tunnel for occasional filming would not support a business case.

Also the fictional town in David Jason's police series 'A Touch of Frost'.

The Northern line carriages in use today date from 1995. Now you just have to find a completely empty one to film - try the Mill Hill East branch off-peak!

If a District Line train would do (bear in mind the section of Circle Line between Tower Hill and South Kensington is shared with the District Line) then there's a primary school in south London that has a single 'D stock' (in service until 2015) carriage as an outdoor classroom or something. I don't know what they have done with the interior or exterior - it's only partly visible on Street View here - looks like it might still be in London Underground livery, the current Google satellite view doesn't show it. Might be closer than the Isle of Wight to get to, would imagine that any filming would have to be at a weekend or in school holidays of course.

There's also the converted 'D stock' trains that were used on the Marston Vale (Bedford - Bletchley) rail line until some time last year - I believe they are out of service and in store - someone else may know where.

I also have a faint idea (I can't remember where I might have seen or read about it) that TFL / London Underground have some mock up station and / or train interiors they use for staff training. Again, someone else might have more idea - hiring this for filming might or might not be possible, but might be a lot less expensive than hiring Charing Cross Jubilee Line platforms and / or hiring a real train for filming purposes.

Somewhere, not in London

The converted "D" stock has had some seating removed prior to donation to add in book shelves down one side, it very much does not look like a train any more inside suitable for filming, unless you can crop very close.

The interior is also late 2010s.

If you want tube stock from the "Early 2000s" then it's actually pretty much anything that's out at the moment with the exception of the SSL and Victoria Line. #

You might be able to get on board one of the former Vivarail / GWR ones down at Long Marston, but for the pain that would cause to even work out who to talk to, it might well be cheaper to go via the TfL route and try to get on one of the Mk.1 Bakerloo units (which is Ex. Northern Line) or current 1995TS which came on in around 1999.

"TfL" does also still have active and/or parked, some OG D78 Stock, the C Stock DM car in the LTM, and the 1962TS and 1960TS in various engineering vehicle duties.
There's also a carriage on stands in some depots, but won't go into that in any real detail here.

They do; it was shown on Secrets of the London Underground recently.

There is the tunnel at Ryde, though - it should be possible to string together a number of takes to create a long sequence that looks like it's in a very much longer tunnel?

At the time in 1987 Superman had a limited budget, so they used a London tube train in Aldwych station to look American in the hope no one noticed!!.
(Edit: Although if Metropolis is a fictional city then it could have fictional subway trains that look like tube trains!).
Now with advanced CGI much easier to correct, and someone has carefully remastered the old clip to make it look more like a New York subway.

Rather off topic (apologies) but scenes of "Denton Station" in that series were filmed at Wakefield Westgate. Quite fitting as some of the "bad guys" in the show would have ended up staying nearby if they were real!

In reality those oddity C08 vehicles heavily cannibalised the officially ‘withdrawn’ cars so I suspect most main components were in fact as old as the rest of the fleet.

Rebuilt above the solebars, so all the electrical bits were older. As both damaged vehicles were 5xxx vehicles (which was why their partners couldn't be paired to make one good unit from the two danmaged ones) the two C08 cars could not have formed a workable unit - and in any case C-stock units were single-ended.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Sorry, another quick aside. I do enjoy seeing references to Superman 4. Made on a budget of about a tenner, an absolutely ridiculous film but you have to admire the chutzpah of the location scout for suggesting Milton Keynes Central stn could double as the United Nations. Which it did if if you downed some strong beers and squinted at the screen.

Anyway, as you were..
