Evening all,

Brighton Mainline has got major delays of about 90 minutes tonight as a person has been hit by a train at Norbury. All lines were closed but have no re-opened.

Being talked about a lot on Twitter, so much that "Norbury" was/is actually trending in the UK. Also people hit at Colchester and Caldicot this evening too, so my thoughts to all the people involved. Also a person under a train on the Victoria Line at Stockwell too, causing delays on the Victoria Line.

Picture of Victoria posted on Twitter earlier on - https://p.twimg.com/AjYToXOCEAA3KVm.jpg

EDIT - Also incredibly busy at London Bridge as a result of this https://p.twimg.com/AjYUFgRCAAA5LRz.jpg

Now this is a terrible lot of news. I myself was delayed between VIC and Redhill (RDH) due to the fatality. A lot of chaos, but the 1649 out of VIC was only 41 minutes late arriving at RDH. As always, dealing with the incident will be more important than anything else, so I am not complaining. The train I caught left punctually but had to be diverted through some very congested areas such as Crystal Palace and Norwood Jct. Hats off to the train driver and conductors (they changed over at ECR) who did a reasonably good job of warning us of the route, the calling points and any possible changes to the stopping pattern, although there were none. I was pleased that people were relatively calm and listened to the advice I was able to give to some of them to listen out for announcements rather than bustling off into a sea of madness at East Croydon. Consequently they got to Redhill on the same train as they started off on! Can't think why they wanted to change until told to, but there we are.

An interesting sight was a FGW 166 reversing in a southbound direction into Platform 1 at Redhill. Normally they go straight in from the NDL. That was also heavily disrupted.

This is the first time I have seen the TfL site as saying the Victoria LU line is "Disrupted" for a long time. Normally it's just "Suspended" or "Part suspended", etc. Truly terrible things have happened out there. My sympathies to the family and friends of the victims and also to the rail staff involved.

I read on a news site (This is Croydon i think) that the train involved was the 15.33 Victoria to East Grinstead.

Major problems for Southeastern too due to a points failure between London Bridge and Cannon Street.

Agree with your sentiments

The FGW 166 reversing into platform 1 southbound at Redhill is unusual that it was reversing, but it is normal for them to enter platform 1 Southbound as there is a holding siding for the FGW (and other) units just north of the station. If there isn't room for Redhill terminators to stay on the platform they will go up to that siding to clear the platform.

I was 20 late leaving MKC on the 1747. Broken down Royal Mail train between Hanslope Jct and MK.

Well, I should have been clearer. It was unusual that it was reversing in that it was doing so as part of the first FGW stock movement for what, according to the LDBs, was ages, and was thus moving in at an unusual time - not that it was unusual to come in from the north. I often notice that. The matrix boards were showing "Please enquire" for the fastest trains to all NDL destinations, so this rather reinforced what I found out.

Is it just me or do instances of people being hit by trains, for whatever reason, seem to be on the increase? On twitter I follow National Rail and it seems that every few hours there is disruption caused by this somewhere in the UK.

I assume statistics are collated on such matters?
