Basically, alternate routes can be no more than 3 miles longer than the direct route, so it's not happening since it's like a 30 mile detour.

Oh, right. Seems as though if it's a viable but longer route it shouldn't be unreasonable for it to be usable as long as its not a ludicrous sort of diversion completely out of the way or something.

It falls under the latter under normal circumstances, but would be useful during times of disruption.

I suppose it depends on how much longer in journey time it adds then. I mean there are more than 5 routes to get to Edinburgh from Glasgow but some you just wouldn't do because they would take so long.

Well the caveat of the ticket in question is "valid only via Stockport" but both ways are via Stockport, so I was seeing whether it was doable. Technically yes, officially no. Both routes are part of the MJ group, so I might do more research to see if it would be doable.
