NIR 80 Class Preservation - YOUR HELP NEEDED!

Hi all, A couple of years ago there was a flurry of activity about saving an 80 Class on these pages. It's actually happening now! None of the old threads are still active, so starting a new one! And after a lot of negotiation we've arranged with Translink to get two vehicles repainted -...

Stranraer to lose direct rail services to Central belt?

Possibly, but I would've thought that the route should be regarded as a TENS route of strategic importance, i.e. linking two parts of the UK together, rather than just local services, which might open up the possibility of EU funding.

Stranraer to lose direct rail services to Central belt?

I just wonder why there appears to be an absence of any effort to reopen the line to Cairnryan to tie in with the new ports, as part of a redevelopment of the Stranraer services.

    Question about NI Railways

Irish Rail no longer have that derogation, but haven't heard similar for NIR. http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/single-view/view/irish-government-looks-at-rail-restructuring-as-derogation-ends/archiv/2012/03.html

    This wins the thread ;)

    Question about NI Railways

My bad! Wrong term... It does seem a bit of a constitutional oddity. But then again we've never really had a proper look at our constitution. Maybe after 2014 the Scots will be more like the IoM??? ;) Not particularly, as at the time there was no prospect of devolved government...

    Question about NI Railways

Err, no... they are Crown Colonies. Northern Ireland is constitutionally more like Scotland or Wales.

    Question about NI Railways

So much the same as what happened to NIE in 1992 and what was going to happen to NI Water later... I doubt that that would've worried them.

    Question about NI Railways

If the Conservatives had stayed in power in 97, NIR probably would've been privatised in some shape or form. However, thank goodness events changed. But it does raise its ugly head every so often, like this Monday: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-24807062 Historically, the main...

    Belfast-Dublin "Enterprise" service

Where to begin... LOLs... ;) Both companies know the Enterprise is clapped out, but because it is run jointly neither side really give a damn, with each saying the opposite government should fork out for investment. And then IE lets the Enterprise doddle behind local DART services into...

Would Scottish Independence Affect services to/from England?

Well... only if the time is ripe... in the fullness of time... and taking things in the round against other competing interests... ;)

Would Scottish Independence Affect services to/from England?

Just a reminder that before the EU there were indeed custom checks needed on trains going between the Republic and Northern Ireland, which was a key factor in many cross-border lines crossing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_%28train_service%29

Translink Antrim-Crumlin-Lisburn line in use 15.09.2013

Ironic given the make-up of Spain and the similarities in the constitutional arrangements!! It's a great video. Quite a few lot of people in all parts of the UK could do with watching it!! ;) Some generalities in it but the concept is very good.

Translink Antrim-Crumlin-Lisburn line in use 15.09.2013

Time to get the ol'video out again... ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10 (note: lots of rail maps show "the UK" as being GB + IoM, which is even more incorrect than leaving NI out, LOLs) ;)

Translink Antrim-Crumlin-Lisburn line in use 15.09.2013

I don't like the term "international" for the pretty self-evident reason - It ain't international!! The simple solution is to use the terms "GB" instead of "UK" for the main section and problem solved. I think the main reason isn't to do with politics - it's simple lack of interest in the main...

    NIR class 80

Latest rumblings suggest it could be 2015 before it is available, due to lack of sandite replacement vehicle as yet.

Translink Antrim-Crumlin-Lisburn line in use 15.09.2013

I know, but put an NI thread in the main section and you watch the tumbleweeds roll by ;) But I do applaud this forum for its policies!! Sure in 2014 we can put Scottish threads into this section too... ;)

    United Kingdom/Ireland Tunnel?

One could make the point that such infrastructure programmes to at least the ferry ports should've been implemented ages ago, if Westminster was serious about a "national" transport infrastructure. For instance, the A75 from Stranraer to Dumfries is a joke. It should be at least dual...

    Resurrection of the Portadown-Armagh Railway?

This probably has to be the single most significant statement on the railways from Northern Ireland in some considerable time. http://www.portadowntimes.co.uk/news/local/kennedy-has-rail-hopes-for-armagh-line-restoration-1-5364856 Whilst certainly not a committment, a transport minister...
