'National Dispute' at Network Rail regarding maintenance

    You would be completely wrong.

Trivia: Lowest EPS speed limit on the network

    I think there’s some 80/90 in places on CGJ7

    Railway Sleepers:

In the Uk axle load has no bearing on this. Highest axle loads tend to be on the lower track categories (lower line speeds) where wider centres are required. I would guess this has more to do with the lower dynamic forces at lower speeds

Why don’t Network Rail tidy up after themselves?

The answer isn't necessary straight forward. If you see strings of rail in the 4ft/cess then they have probably been dropped for a future renewal, or have been left from a cancelled renewal. Rail will be left in place so work can be replanned. If the renewal in not replanned the rail is left...

Altrincham - Chester line speed improvements

There was a recent test to try a single 66 headed biomass weight train out of Victoria which was largely successful. With a 60 or 59 would have been better though!

Altrincham - Chester line speed improvements

Not a lack of maintainance, but a failed track lower which caused the track to become unmaintainable. There are 6-8 biomass services daily afaik.

Altrincham - Chester line speed improvements

Ding ding we have a winner. There has been a 30mph TSR on for some time with it being reduced to 20moh more recently. This was caused by a previous track lower to give the route the published gauge clearance to allow container traffic to divert through here. The drainage was never lowered and a...

Campaign to restore passenger services on the Middlewich Link Line

To get the route to 40mph would require total renewal of most of the track, which would cost more than 5 million quid. Hardly minimal cost.

    "HP Rail"

    Pretty sure it’s 2102

    "HP Rail"

I’m pretty sure you can’t weld repair HP switches, as such installation has to be centrally approved. Standards stipulate you need to install 0 cant to 0 cant to prevent uneven wear on curves between the HP and grade A rail. This does give a bit of (I believe) unintended wiggle room on flat curves!

    "HP Rail"

I think anything over 260 grade A counts as HP rail. I guess that includes MHH, MHT, etc

    Ribblehead Viaduct

I don't think having to work green zone would be a massive issue. Also if you've guard rail from a train derailment point of view there would be no issues there, you might need to do something for the staff but if it's ok now maybe not such an issue (unless there are grandfather rights).

    Hope Valley Capacity Scheme updates

It's for Earle's. This financial year I believe.

    Calder Valley line improvement works

Mostons being rebuilt after the freight train mashed it, might be rolled up into those works?

    Track renewal machine(s)

Elsewhere in the world there is great engineering access, in Germany and Austria through the vast amount of bidirectional running and cross overs allowing the machines to crack on an renew large sections in one go, hence the costs come right down. In the U.K. we're extremely limited with...

    Track renewal machine(s)

NR have 2 TRS (track laying) machines and 5 BCS (ballast cleaning) machines. I believe one of the TRS machines is being mothballed cp6 but the BCS machines have plenty of work. NTC are a different beast all together.

    Hope Valley Capacity Scheme updates

Why? None of it would be going in that direction.

    Wrexham redouble

£500k will get you half a unit of S&C or 500 yards of plain line renewal at a push, you're not going to be getting much there.

Manchester Airport railway station, discussion and ideas

The biomass being the real killer here, set to increase going forwards too.
