Train hits buffers at Preston (01/04)

Whenever I've seen 185s in there it's looked extremely tight, I imagine the driver had to pull up quite close to make sure the rear doors fit on the platform with a 158 there. Like others have mentioned this bay is used regularly both during the week and during disruption.

Southeastern - Policy on opening gate line when station is busy

This is actually what they used to do a couple of years ago and it worked rather well since you could have 1 or 2 RPIs + the 2 ticket desks selling walk up tickets then the 3 machines free for people collecting (which is also a contribution to the problem since you get passengers unfamiliar with...

Southeastern - Policy on opening gate line when station is busy

Every Saturday for the past 3 years I've been using Canterbury West there has always been queues out of the door for the 2 ticket office windows & 3 ticket machines, usually with wait times of upwards of 15 minutes. So if you arrive in reasonable time for your train you can still end up missing...

    Driver Dispatch at Rectory Road

I did think that would be the case, it has a very straight platform. So how easy is it to look back out the window and close the doors at the same time? Definitely safer with the monitors so you can see the back (better yet with a guard but let's not start that debate here :p )

    Driver Dispatch at Rectory Road

Apologies if this has been discussed before, I was passing through Rectory Road on the overground and noticed unlike other stations either side, this one had no DOO mirrors or camera monitors, so without these how does the driver perform the dispatch and close doors? As far as I know the Class...

    List of PERTIS Machines

Definite: Wye, Chiham, Chartham on the Ashford Intl - Canterbury West - Ramsgate line Selling (between Canterbury East & Faversham) Possibly: Pluckley on SEML

    "Disc 02%" printed on ticket

I've seen the same thing with Southeastern's web only fares when they have a sale - sadly they stopped you putting a railcard on top of it (you used to be able to get up to 66% off sometimes!)

18+ Oyster photocard - mill hill

Provided both stations are within Zones 1-4 then there's no problem

Why Can't First Get the Air-Con to Work on Their 158's?

From what I heard there's two different systems, there's one which SWT/EMT use that works ok most of the time and there's the original? The issue with the original is that it relied on CFC Gases which were banned in the 90s I believe, so replacement gases didn't work as well with the old system...

    Class 800/1 testing update

If they're like the 395 doors then they'll be just as slow as the ones on a Pendolino (they have the step that has to fold out)... After pushing the button when released they take time due to a second lock I think so often you see people push the button and nothing happens for 5-6 seconds until...

List of ticket offices that are printing tickets in the new format

Kirkham & Wesham is, I think it was one of the first ones to do so - I think a lot of the Northern Rail ones are (they were the ones trialling it)

    London Bridge Fiasco 2/6/15

Ahh that makes sense! Thanks for the info! Out of curiousity, how much third rail got turned off since the trains didn't lose power at both Charing Cross and Cannon Street so I presume they have quite a finite control over the sections to switch off?

    London Bridge Fiasco 2/6/15

I overheard a couple of staff members at Ashford chatting about it trying to figure out why as well. Wouldn't surprise me if it was alcohol-fuelled given people would be coming in to London for a night out at that time of night (though it was a Tuesday and who goes out on a Tuesday)

    London Bridge Fiasco 2/6/15

Both times they announced they had to turn the power off was when we were sat at Charing Cross or Cannon Street so I believe it was they forced themselves off a stuck train outside London Bridge was what we were told and the police had to round them up.

    London Bridge Fiasco 2/6/15

I have literally just arrived home having boarded what I thought was the 23:40 Charing Cross - Canterbury West train (and here's an ordeal I never want to repeat). I thought I'd share my experience from a passenger perspective and maybe gain some understanding in what went on. To clarify the...

    'Do not alight here' signs

Chiham on the Ashford - Ramsgate via Canterbury West line has them (they look quite worn out so I'm guessing from slam door days), yet Wye and Chartham either side of Chiham have the same size platforms but have either had their signs removed or never had them. More confusing - Wye has more...

    Train runs over camera!

From a non-railway worker and non-spotter perspective this is a very risky and bad idea. It might produce cool videos but the simple act of going onto the crossing and stopping, fiddling with a camera etc would be enough to distract you from a train coming should the situation change or the...

When were diesel particulate filters first used on Britain's trains?

Tad bit off topic (apologies) but SNAP! Mine went almost bang on 83,000 miles too and right as I was going up a steep hill (car went into a kind of safe mode so I had some power but it was slow). I'm all for cutting emissions but having to blast it down a motorway for an hour a week to keep it...

Weardale Railway - Bishop Auckland West and website

Oh god as a Computer Science student that website just brings horrifying flashbacks from yesteryear, it's probably been done using point and click in FrontPage 2003... AND COMIC SANS oh it keeps getting worse
